A Call For Help

Estimated reading time — 6 minutes

Unsealed file from the Esther Police Department. Case File # 10-0251. On May 31, 2010, Esther Police department and the Bard County Sheriff’s Department received a weak 911 call from twenty-three year old Scottie Jones, reporting that he and his friends were trapped in the woods and needed help.

911 call:

Operator: 911, what’s your emergency?

Jones: H-h-hello?! Is this the police?

Operator: No sir you have reached 911.

Jones: O-okay that’s fine! Listen to me, we need help. (Distant screaming)

Operator: Sir? Are you there? What was that sound?”

Jones: (Panting) Shit… shit shit shit they’re comingming!

Operator: Sir, are you there? Who’s coming!

Jones: Look I can’t explain! And you won’t believe me anyways! Just send people out here! Before its–

Operator: Hello? Sir? Sir! Sir, are you still with me?

Call is cut off.

A joint search effort between the EPD and BCSD was launched, along with K-9 units on loan from the state police and local civilian volunteers set out into the nearby woods just outside of Esther. On June 3rd, a single phone was found underneath a log, confirmed to belong to Scottie Jones. On the phone was a recording during what police suspect to be the final minutes of Scottie Jones’s life. It is because of this recording that police were able to identify the other five peers who were with Jones the day he disappeared: Twenty two year old Misha Petrov, twenty three year old Haley De Silva, twenty four year old Alex Willow, twenty one year old Ethan Chen, and twenty two year old Sam Rolette. The phone was turned in for evidence and reviewed by EPD detective Ralph Schneider.

Recording:

What were we thinking? What the fuck were we thinking? I called the police, but they’re not going to get here in time. I’m going to be dead by then. All the others are. If I don’t record this, no one will know that this happened. My name is Scottie. Scottie Jones. I am twenty three years old, a college student who recently graduated. Where I graduated isn’t really important. What matters is who I am now, and who my friends are. “Were”. Who they were. Again, they’re all dead now. Taken by those things. I don’t know if you’ll see them when you guys come looking for me, but just in case I’ll just leave this to warn you guys. Warn you guys about the body under the tree. I’ll start from the beginning, with what time I have.

It would’ve been a full day before I’m recording this. I woke up at like 10 I think to a call from my buddy Alex Willow. Alex is the oldest of the group, and somewhat is the leader. He’s five foot nine, about 230 pounds of muscle. If you find him, he’ll be wearing a red jacket, long black pants, with black and white running shoes. He’s got short blond hair that’s slightly combed. Alex called all of us at 10, asking us if we wanted to go on a hike. Now, I didn’t really feel like going, but since everyone else did, I didn’t want to be left out, so I went anyway. Big mistake.

There were four others in the group. Ethan Chen, Misha Petrov, Haley De Silva, and Sam Rolette. Ethan Chen is about six foot two, played intramural basketball and volleyball when we were still in school. If you find his body, he will be wearing a thin gray jacket, gray pants, running shoes. Misha Petrov, Russian kid, is about six foot tall on the dot, and is wearing a black jacket, dark blue shorts, and black shoes. You know what, fuck it. They’re all wearing jackets, even I’m wearing one. It’s 40 degrees outside.

When you run your investigation, you will find how we are all tied together, but in short, we’re all friends, and Haley and Sam are a couple. They’ve been dating for about three years now, and Sam had told me he was going to propose to her soon. Doesn’t matter now, of course. Anyways, I gotta get this out there, before it kills me. Because it will kill me. Fuck… Yeah, it will kill me. I can’t run, I can barely walk.

I’ll cut right to the chase as to what happened. We were about three hours into our hike, when we heard what sounded like a desperate cry for help. It sounded like a young woman, and she was screaming for help. In our foolish desire to help, we began following the cries, calling back to them saying that we were on our way to help. The cries continued, and got more and more desperate the closer we got. The further we went, the more I began to feel like something was wrong. No matter how much we shouted and how much we called, we seemed to be nowhere near this woman.

After what must’ve been almost an hour of following it, we finally gave up. Haley insisted that we just call 911 and report it, but there was no signal where we were, ‘cause we went too fucking far out into the woods. Just as we went to turn around, we heard rustling in the trees, and the familiar cries for help started again. But this time they were closer. As we scanned the trees, I finally glimpsed who was crying for help. More like what was crying for help. The thing that sat in the tree looked like a naked, skinny man. Its hairless skin resembled a mannequin, its flesh smooth and shiny, almost fake. The creature’s eyes were pale and empty, yet glared at me with wide-eyed, hungry malice that sent chills up my spine. The creature twitched and let out strange croaking sounds, as if it was choking on something.

We were frozen in horror as the creature opened its mouth and, in the same woman’s voice, began to cry for help. It was mocking us, a twisted smile creeping on its face. It knew it got us, and there was no escape. Haley was the first to scream, and was the first to run. We didn’t even know where we were going, we just fucking took off and tried to get as far away from it as possible. The thing kept screaming, kept crying for our help, and we could hear it scrambling through the trees to chase after us. We began hearing more voices screaming for help, all in different voices as the rustling in the trees picked up in numbers. Some sounded like women, others were men, others sounded like young children. All of them screamed and cried out in desperation, mixed with a high pitched laugh that sounded almost mechanical in pitch.

We desperately ran for our lives, running in all directions, losing complete grasp of our bearings. I don’t think that we were anywhere close to where we started. We might’ve been running in circles. I don’t know how long it was before those things started getting us. I heard Alex scream as one of the creatures pulled him up into the trees. I can still hear his pleas for mercy and for our help as the creatures began to do whatever it is that they did to him, until he fell silent. I could only listen as they picked off the rest of us. Next, it was Ethan, and then it was Misha. I tripped over a log or rock of some kind and twisted my ankle before I rolled into a ditch.

I took cover in this hole underneath a tree and I’ve been hiding here ever since. Haley and Sam were the last ones to go. God, their screams as those things got their hands on them. They screamed for each other, and I could hear Haley sobbing as those things dragged her back into the trees, where their terror turned to agonizing pain and despair. I’d never heard anything like that in my life, not even my worst nightmares. They haven’t found me yet, I’m trying to record this as quietly as I can, but I know they’ll find me eventually.

My fucking ankle is killing me. My legs are numb. They’re still searching for me. I can hear them in the trees, crawling on the ground, still screaming for help. Except now they’re screaming with my friends’ voices. Their final desperate pleas echoed over and over to lure me in, just as they had for so many other people that have come through here. The screams are getting closer. I think they know where I am. Fuck… I don’t want to die. I love you Mom and Dad. Bye Jackie. Take care of them for me, okay? Goodbye Angie, I love you. Sorry we couldn’t get married like we talked about… All right guys. I’ll see you soon.

{End of Recording}

The police searched for another two days, but the bodies were never recovered. However, K-9 Bella had vanished shortly after picking up on the scent, and separated from her handler, State Trooper Hattie McDonough. McDonough reported hearing cries for help in a voice now believed by Detective Schneider to be Scottie Jones. Bella disappeared further into the woods, and was believed to have been lost as well. Before the search was called off, certain officers reported hearing distant cries for help from unknown voices, as well as a dog howling in distress.

The case remains officially closed, with all five victims declared dead at the hands of a pack of coyotes. The recording was never released to the public.
