The rules horror generator writes an unsettling list of instructions for any place you choose: a night shift, a summer camp, your own street. Each list mixes harmless-sounding rules with ones that hint at something terrible. It’s for writers exploring one of the internet’s favorite horror formats and fans who love reading between the lines. Free, instant and private.
How to use it
Type a place, or leave it blank for a random one, and generate a list. The best rule lists contradict themselves, skip a number, or include one rule that seems to be written by someone else; small inconsistencies make readers ask who wrote them and why. Turn the list into a story by following a narrator who has to obey every rule, then has to break one. For atmosphere, read The Backrooms and browse our locations and sites category.

Frequently asked questions
What is rules horror?
Rules horror is a story format built around a list of instructions, usually for a job or place, where the rules hint at a threat the narrator doesn’t fully understand.
Is the place I type saved?
No. Your input is used only in your browser to build the list and is never stored.
Can a list of rules be submitted as a story?
A bare list usually isn’t enough. Wrap it in a complete narrative of at least 500 words so it reads as a finished story.
