The internet is full of weird horror stories, and Ticci Toby is definitely one of those characters people never forget, even though it’s been more than a decade since its appearance in 2013. Considering how iconic his orange goggles, mouth guard, striped hoodie, and two hatchets have become over the years, most likely, no one will ever forget about him.
Even if you never read the original creepypasta, you’ve probably seen Ticci Toby in fan drawings, videos, games, or cosplay alongside other famous internet horror characters. Still, it turns out many people still don’t know how he became a violent killer working for Slender Man.
In this article, we’ll explain everything you should know about Ticci Toby’s origin and backstory.
Who Is Ticci Toby?

Let’s start with the basics and get to know Ticci Toby in the first place. His real name is Tobias “Toby” Erin Rogers, and he is a fictional teenager who somehow ended up serving a famous creepypasta villain, Slender Man.
This character was originally created by an artist and writer known as Kastoway, who published his story on DeviantArt in 2013. Toby appeared during a time when creepypasta communities were extremely active, and new stories spread online in seconds. It’s true that the internet still offers interactive entertainment today, including social gaming platforms that use Sweepstakes coins, but back then, readers spent hours exploring stories and creating artwork about their favorite internet monsters.
As a result, many popular details about Toby came from fans rather than Kastoway’s original story. Unlike supernatural creatures such as Smile Dog, Toby begins his story as a human. He’s not an average person, though — he has Tourette syndrome, which causes involuntary tics, and another condition called CIPA, which prevents him from feeling physical pain. Because of this, his classmates always mocked his movements and even called him a cruel nickname, “Ticci Toby.”
Eventually, the situation became so difficult that he left public school and began studying from home.
Ticci Toby’s Backstory
Unfortunately, leaving school didn’t make Toby’s life easier. Poor Toby had to deal with his abusive alcoholic father at home, who mistreated not only him but the entire family. Although his mother tried to protect him, Toby used to reach out to his sister, Lyra, whenever he needed support and understanding. In fact, Lyra was his only real friend. But things changed when Toby and Lyra got into a terrible car accident, which killed his sister. After returning home from the hospital, he couldn’t stop remembering the crash. No wonder that after this accident, he became emotionally numb and gradually began losing control of his thoughts.
This part of the story is important because that is exactly when Toby first noticed Slender Man watching him from outside his house. The tall, faceless creature continued appearing wherever he went. At some point, it was already noticeable that Toby was hearing voices and having strange visions, so his mother took him to a psychiatrist, but his condition only became worse.
Why Did Toby Kill His Father?
It’s hard to say whether Toby actually wanted to kill his father despite all the wrong he had done or whether Slender Man completely controlled his actions. But one thing is for sure: Toby had already lived with fear and anger for years when he started hearing voices that pushed him to kill his father.
Toby killed his father in a shocking situation – he attacked and killed him in front of his mother. And that’s one of the most significant moments in the whole story because this is when he turned from a traumatized teenager into the violent character creepypasta fans recognize today.
Is Ticci Toby Based on a Real Person?

As you can see, Toby’s backstory is simple enough to be retold again and again. That is a big reason he spread so widely. Fans later added some elements, such as a sense of humor, a love of waffles, and new friends and rivals.
If we rely on the fan wikis, Ticci Toby is completely fictional and wasn’t based on a real killer, patient, or urban legend. The author, Kastoway, confirmed that himself, after some fans, began claiming that they had seen or communicated with Ticci Toby. Nevertheless, the character became so popular, and his story was so simple and compelling that it was hard to convince the entire fandom that he wasn’t real.
Kastoway eventually tried to distance his character from the creepypasta community and attempted to separate Toby from Slender Man. Not surprisingly, at that point, it was too late, and today, countless fan stories, drawings, and videos still continue to spread everywhere on the internet.
