We come across many interesting fictional creepypasta characters online. Some of them are so influential that they create an entirely new cultural heritage. When it comes to creepypasta characters, they usually have a diverse appearance and a complex yet intriguing persona. One of them is the Slender Man, who became the face of the creepypasta genre and behind many a nightmare.

Although some people avoid scary stories because of the eerie and unsettling feelings they may cause, others get incredibly excited about them. With its creativity, the character of Slender Man has earned a top spot among popular creepypastas and continues to be the inspiration for various artwork and stories.

In this article, we will talk about the full history of Slender Man and the significance of this character in dark fiction.

The Birth of Slender Man

Slender Man

The Slender Man was created in 2009 as a meme by Eric Knudsen. He designed the meme for a competition called “Something Awful,” which was on the comedy web forum. The theme was an idea for a modern myth that would terrify the public.

Knudsen, with the pseudonym Victor Surge, sent two fake photos seemingly from the mid-1980s, where a tall, eerie male figure is creeping behind a group of children with a caption that said 14 young people and a photographer were missing.

How the Meme Became an Online Myth

Initially, the intention was just to create a meme, but viewers immediately started creating drawings and stories out of it. Even though it’s just a fiction, these days it’s sometimes discussed as seriously as real-life crime cases. As the Slender Man meme exploded, it started appearing in video games, numerous creepypastas, and even the best murder mystery podcasts. There’s even a YouTube series telling the Slender Man’s story, which is called Marble Hornets. His development was even called “an open-source storytelling.”

What Makes Slender Man So Scary

Slender Man Legend

This character is like a mix of modern horror and classic mythological fiction. Similar to villains from folklore stories, like the Headless Horseman or the Big Bad Wolf, Slender Man is often portrayed standing in the woods.

However, according to some stories, he might also show up in basements, outside windows, and on empty streets late at night. He appears to be a very tall, thin man in a black suit with no face, just plain skin.

The Dark Side of Slender Man’s Popularity

The Slender Man became so influential that some people started to believe it existed in real life and tried to find him. Because of this, there were numerous investigations, but of course, nothing was found.

This belief has also inspired some unfortunate accidents. One of them included the attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl. According to reports, two of her friends lured her into the woods and stabbed her 19 times to see if the Slender Man would notice them. Luckily, the girl survived. When her supposed friends were asked why they committed this crime, they responded that they wanted to prove wrong to those who think Slender Man is not real.

How Slender Man Took Over Modern Horror Media

The stories of the Slender Man developed beyond the initial tale and the creepypasta community with the stories, myths and images about him varying a lot. In some of them, he has multiple arms like an octopus’s tentacles, but according to others, he has no arms or any body extensions at all. Sometimes he murders his victims himself by completely disemboweling them and bagging their organs to the point that the police cannot find any leads. He can also compel his victims to kill each other to avoid doing the crime himself.

The flexibility of this character, the way it can adapt to any kind of horror storyline and any time period, is what made it so phenomenal. It literally created a whole new direction of creepypasta storytelling and inspired many creative works, including film and TV shows. The most popular is the direct Hollywood film adaptation called Slender Man released by Sony Pictures and directed by filmmaker Sylvain White. Indirectly, it also influenced TV shows like American Horror Story, Supernatural, and Channel Zero.

Now, if you look around, you will find not just all these works, but actual merch of the Slender Man. They include key rings, bracelets, stuffed toys, and even Funko Pop figures. You can also find the Slender Man-inspired LEGO.

Bottom Line

Overall, the Slender Man became so impactful that even Knudsen could not believe how big it had escalated. Nobody could imagine that a simple meme for a fun competition could evolve into an online myth, with countless creepypastas, games, podcasts, and videos. The Slender Man is a significant figure in creepypasta culture. This character continues to be an inspiration for many artistic works, for both teenagers and adults, and his legend will continue to live on.
