Tower of Silence

Estimated reading time — 2 minutes

January 19, 2003 —
Indian officials ventured into a deep jungle, investigating several missing persons reports from a nearby city. What they found was a “Tower of Silence,” or dakhma. Zoroastrians use these sites to dispose of bodies in the open air.

While sites like these are not uncommon in certain parts of india, several peculiarities hint at something more unusual…

None of the bodies depicted in the photograph were identified. Villagers from nearby, though initially surprised at the sheer number of corpses in the dakhma, proved unable to recognize the bodies. The corpses also do not match the descriptions of the missing people.

There were no animals around except for maggots and flies. Zoroastrians rely on birds (i.e. buzzards) to dispose of the bodies, in the belief they are contributing back to the Earth. Officials found the corpses relatively untouched by any sort of animal.

There is no official count of the bodies. In fact, little work was actually accomplished at the site and, perhaps, this is why only one photograph has emerged. Officials avoided the spot – not only because they felt uneasy looking at it, but for the following, as well:

The deep pit in the center of the photograph was filled with several feet of festering blood – far more than the bodies on the outside could ever supply. The stench was so unbearable that many of the officials began to get nauseous when they first approached the dakhma.

The expedition was ended when a villager accidentally kicked a small bone into the pit, penetrating the coagulated surface of the pool. A massive burst of gas from the decomposing blood erupted from the pit, splashing those looking into it, along with the photographer.

Those caught in the explosion were immediately sent to the hospital, where they were quarrantined for possible infection. They became delirious with fever, shouting about “being tainted with the blood of Ahriman” (the personification of evil in Zoroastrianism), despite never having admitted having any familiarity with the religion.

In fact, many of them had no idea what the dakhma was when they had found it. Delirium turned to insanity as many began to attack hospital staff until they were sedated. The fever eventually killed all of them.

When officials returned with HAZMAT gear the following day, the site was empty. All the bodies had been removed and, astonishingly, the pool of blood in the pit had been drained. All that remained of the incident was this photograph.

  1. I didn’t see the bodies at first, I was like…
“Uh…What? It’s just a pit, why is that scar – HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!!”

  2. Idi 'Big Daddy' Amin

Man, do you guys stand up in movie theatres shouting about how what’s being shown on screen is clearly edited, and makes heavy use of CGI? It’s a story, not a courtroom testimony.

    Bunch of fucking mongs.

  3. Guys, it’s a story. He photoshopped the photo for your enjoyment. Try not to be so ungrateful next time Jack. I thought it was a nice story actually. 8/10

  4. Tower of Science

Photo is real, but shopped. Look up ‘Tower of silence’ in Google.

No blood in pit- just more bodies. There is also a second photo. In the second photo, all the bodies that were on the ring are mysteriously gone- but the ones in the pit are still there.

I do not doubt that the story is real however except for the parts about the blood in the pit.

@Jack, why does it matter that the photo was shopped? The only change was the depth of the pool anyway…

  6. Did the math:
Several feet of blood in that pit would equal up to about 30,000 gallons of blood.

Seeing that the average human body has 1.25 gallons of blood, this would require human sacrifice to a horribly astonishing level.

  7. It said that the bodies were removed, but in the picture there are clearly bodies there.
It would have been a lot more enjoyable if you had stuck to the facts.
Or at the very least, put the picture before where it said the bodies had been removed.

    1. It said in the story they took the picture before the bodies were removed. If you read the story, it makes sense, and is a bit more spooky in my opinion to have the picture at the end.

  8. I liked the story overall. Didn’t need the picture really-just the imagination of the tower would’ve done. The only thing that didn’t sit well was the blood exploding. While I like the imagery, I don’t think the chemicals or gases produced by decomposing blood are volatile-certainly not enough that a well as wide as the one in the picture would explode all over the researchers. Not bad though, I’d give it a 7/10

  9. Let’s be honest, no shit like this really happens, and if it does it’s not discovered and photographed it’s kept quiet by everyone so that it doesn’t scare common people, But nice pasta anyway <3 always love reading sh*t like this 6/10

    1. tower of silence is real shit. The part about the crew attacking hospital staff was made up but I remember this article in National Geographic a few years back

  10. you guys kill a scary story before bed, i read these before bed & i got kinda freaked & then i click the comments & it’s like ” way to ruin a good f’kn time nigggas.. “

  11. Once there was a cup. It was no ordinary cup. It was cuuuuursed. All who drank the drink from the cup would suffer horrible stains upon their upper lips. It would drive the drinker crazy to the point of horrible and violent suicide. Some drinkers would throw themselves in front of cars and others would hang themselves from aircrafts with barb-wire nooses. Others would deliberately not repost those creepy messages found in the comment sections of popular websites and would be brutally slaughtered for their ignorance. Unfortunately the cup was mass produced and are now found commonly in all households. You will die in 7 days. If you don’t send this to 5 other people then you will be thrown into a pit of lava. If you DO resend this to 5 peoples you will still die but it will annoy the hell out of all the peoples. SO RESEND. Or don’t. I don’t care.

  12. Cool Story replier

I thought this was pretty cool but creepy, My house has 3 dead souls, me on a morning, but seriously, MORE INFOS :D

  13. This has been badly photo-shopped I am afraid to say. Just search “Tower Of Silence” in google images to see the real photo and some others. I assume the story is fabricated also.

    1. Nicola Marie Jackson
