Tomino’s Hell

Estimated reading time — 3 minutes

This is popular Japanese story is about a poem called “Tomino’s Hell.” They say that you should only read with your mind, and never out loud. If you were to read it out loud, then you must take responsibility for your actions.”Tomino’s Hell” (トミノの地獄) is written by Yomota Inuhiko (四方田 犬彦) in a book called “The Heart is Like a Rolling Stone” (心は転がる石のように), And was included in Saizo Yaso’s (西條 八十) 27th collection of poems in 1919. It’s not sure how this rumor started, but there’s only a warning that “If you read this poem out loud, tragic things (凶事) will happen.” It just looks like a curse.

It asks to not compare this with the common “You’ll grow taller” or even “My parents died.” Do you get a sense of how dangerous this is?

This story used to be very popular in 2ch, and there were many people taking pictures and videos as proof and posting them on 2ch. There were many users that said that nothing happened, but there were also many posts that didn’t have the user come back to post the results. I think it’s scarier than someone posting that someone else got sick or that someone else passed away. But if you were to read it out loud, it’s better to read it in Japanese rather than the translation.

  1. I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find anything about one of the other mentioned poems. Does anyone know about the “My Parent’s Died” poem?
BTW the curse is probably hard to invoke if you don’t speak Japanese. Mispronounce a word and you’ve said a different word. Might make it harmless or might make a new curse you never know.

  2. I liked it I understand it easily then again. I’m that type of person. That understands complicated things and not easily understandable things with my complex brain/imagination but I liked it its quite interesting

  3. i think that is fake

i am half japanese and i readed this very well 2 times first at 2 week ago and just now but nothiing happeneeeed

  4. okay i tried it week ago and i sayed in this page i keep update but nothing happened… i readed this 2 times japanese and 1 times english but nothing…

  5. I have a question for those of you claiming to have read it out loud in Japanese and nothing happening: Did you pronounce it right?

  6. Guys! I read it out loud bcoz im curious to know what will happens *laugh* … I investigate this poem and read it out loud almost 5 times? or 7? not sure abt that.. I’ll repost if anything happens~ wait for me :P

  7. So I just came across this story. I don’t usually believe this kind of legends, curses, myths and so on,but I can’t help but being a little bit freaked out by the thoughts of reading this out loud.
I wanted to do a little research to see if this thing is true or not so I decided to start with investigating the author of the poem (Yomota Inuhiko) and guess what? There was nothing. I didn’t find anything related to him except the only place that he is mentioned: the various pages about Tomino’s Hell and all tell the exact same story,no more information. Now,I can’t say if the person is real or not because if this has came out in 1919 that means that the author had been born around 1860-1870 and he may not have been very famous so maybe that’s the reason there is nothing about him on the net. But still, considering the fact that I haven’t found anything about him I’m not sure if he even existed. I will do my best to find out the truth because this has really caught my eye.
Ah,but Saijo Yaso (the person who included the poem to his collection of poems) is real. So I’m not sure if this story is true or is it one big joke.
I have also read a lot of responses from people who have read it out loud and some say that great tragedies have happened to them since then but others say that nothing has changed. Of course people can’t be a reliable source because most like to lie, trying to freak others out.

Well one thing is for sure,I will not stop until I get to the bottom of this.I will find the truth no matter what.If I find anything interesting I will post again.

  8. ObligedPython:
Ive been reading this story for a while now and while reading this in my head i would read it in japanese and english and nothing happened. After reading this i went on another page that had a more accurate transilation and after reading it you could clearly see a diffrence in the two storys, when i finished reading it i came back to this page and i began hearing some sort of whisper but i couldnt make out what it was saying. This happened about ten minutes before i posted this, i will repost if anything new happens. If you want to ask me anything about it contact me on xbox live because i posted this from my xbox my tag is above.

I did the same as you. I had my speakers on pretty loud but after reading it they went and I heard some strange mumbling. Then they went back on again and nothing else happened.

  9. Okay so I just read it out loud in both languages and i’m friken paranoid at the moment…if you want to check up on me here is my kik if you have one > pewdiliapie check up in a few days or so

  10. little miss black cat

Tried it I almost fell down the stairs at my school but I caught myself so I actually prevented the curse

  11. its fuckin fake ive read it for 2 years agoo im alive and cool actually it gave me luck ive found the girl of my life

  12. i feel obligated to point something out, the author of this poem cannot be found NOT attached to a ‘scary’ story page. that being said, I’m a Paranormal Investigator and i have seen and experienced some crazy stuff! if you do read this poem aloud do so at your own risk. if you have a wonderful life and have a lot to live for, find some other means of getting your thrills. there are reasons for this stuff being considered curses, regardless as to whether or not you believe in it or not, PLEASE take care when messing with this stuff!

    1. Hey, hey. I attract paranormal beings and such, so I definitely should never read it aloud, right? So many bad things happen to us even without that, frequent illness, mental illnesses, abuse (very light, I’m fine), even…
      Well, I really don’t want to say…

Anyway, every semi-major bad thing has already happened, and one hugely major thing… So I shudder to think of what could happen if I said it… Especially since I’ve always been prone to the paranormal.

Did you read it aloud? What happened?

  13. BROS BROS THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED!!!!!!!!1
MY FRIEND READ THIS AND HE DIDN’T BELIEVE THAT DON’T READ IT OUT LOUD AND HE DID AND THE NEXT DAY HE DIED

  14. dojen jenny j. bonares

i try it to read with japanese but nothing happened maybe it’s just a joke that if you read it loud there would be happen so bad to you but before i read it i pray for my safety it’s ok! but pray before you read it for your sake… :)

  15. I read this out loud around the time of the end of november to the beginning of december. I read it because i didnt care about life i was too upset to think about the consequences. I read the poem before but never out loud. I ruined my life. DONT READ IT OUT LOUD! This is not a joke i became ill with most horrible imaginable pain. It was unexpected and i think thats how the poem gets you. I dont know why someone would create such a poem or how but beware. Is it a coincidence i dont think so. Do it at your own risk. I am thankful to have my life i hope.

    1. dojen jenny j. bonares

hahahha!!! i don’t believe you! because i’d read this poem but about ten days after that no came to happen to me! i’m blessed by god!

  16. I give it a 7/10. It would have been better if those books actually existed. I did a lot of research into it; surprise, surprise, no luck. Besides, the poem itself doesn’t make sense. Who is Tomino? What happened to him/her to want vengeance? Vomited glass beads? I can understand blood and fire relating to hell, but glass beads?

Apparently, these “poets” lived during the Shōwa period; a time period of enlightened peace/harmony. Why would the poets spread a curse during a peaceful era?

The poem needs a backstory, if you’re going to try and convince people that they’ll die. The problem is, most urban legends don’t have good back-stories. All in all, I give this Pasta a 7/10. The idea and conception are good, but it still needs a lot of work.

  17. whenever i read i get sharp pain in my chest even though i do it in my head it is a traditional story though and i fear what would happen if i read it out loud overall im not superspicuos (Bad spelling much?) but this got me.

  18. What made this extra freaky is that, on Thursday, in my Japanese Appreciation Club at school, they read this. They didn’t get it off of here. I had just thought of looking this up not 5 seconds before I scrolled onto it. Nothing bad has happened so far. *knocks on wood* it seems like something was trying to get derpbutt from publishing this… as if… it’s real.

This one truly freaked me out for multiple reasons. 10/10

Oh and also, I couldn’t post yesterday for some reason, but that happened yesterday. I read it out loud yesterday. Today, my blood work came and I had high cholesterol and low vitamin D.

I’ll come back in a week +- one day to tell you if anything did happen. And I won’t lie about it. If I forget, click on my name and that will take you to my YouTube channel. Post a comment or send me a PM to remind me.

      1. Well, seeing as has everything bad that could happen to me has happened in the last eight days…don’t read it, please, save yourself.

        1. LIES,i read it aloud 2 weeks ago in both languages and nothing has happened,im here to be good guy turtle so dont worry

  19. I read this aloud al the way through and nothing happened ha. By the way have you tried saying the CandleJ*** word you will get swept away. But my sister said Candlejack and she van

  20. I’ve read it out loud. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. I won’t lie, as a normal dude who are always intrigue by superstitious BS like this, i am kinda afraid. But that’s pretty common, cause we can’t prove that it’s not real unless we try it ourselves. It’s the fear of the unknown. You don’t believe ghosts are real but we can’t help but to feel uncomfortable when you’re alone in an old, long and forgotten building. Especially when people said that it’s haunted. Try reading it out aloud, i assure you nothing will happen. To prove it, i’ll post something here in the next 3 days to show you this is just a mere myth :)

    1. Endoplasmic Reticulum

Dude, nobody has responded because hardly anyone writes a second comment. Also, I really don’t get why this is considered a good story.

  22. *reads it out loud* I’m not superstitious or anything like that. I really don’t understand how it is a curse or anything but I read it out loud in both English and Japanese. Let’s see what happens.

        1. dojen jenny j. bonares

o my god! you all believing this poem is terrible?! you all believe but me? hahaha! no way! i’d read it loud and i’d laugh after hahahahaha!!! it’s a big joke! i don’t believe it!! hahahaha!! my comment on this poem read it out loud!!! enjoy! and you will see nothing would be happen to you! i’m serious hahaha! i’d got a copy of this in my home and i’d read this so many times! hahaha!! “tanga” that would be i called to who you guys believing this! sayonara!

  23. By the way, this pasta is notable for being almost impossible for me to publish. It took me like 6 tries – every time I tried to schedule it, the site would lag and time out. Soon after, we were hacked. I blame Tomino’s Hell.

  24. Wow, this is really amazingly scary. I don’t know why it has such a low score. At first when I read the first part where is says Tomino’s sister vomited blood I thought, "Dear god, ew…" In the end, awesome poem.

  25. I liked this one, particularly because it has a backstory, and i am utterly fascinated by Japanese folktales like this. 10/10
