The Photograph Pile

Estimated reading time — < 1 minute

A young girl walking home from school found a small pile of Polaroid photos lying in the gutter. There were twenty in all, neatly wrapped in a rubber band. She picked them up, and as she walked she started to browse. The first photo was that of a ghostly white man on a black background, standing just far enough away from the camera that she couldn’t make out his features. The girl slid the photo to the back of the stack and looked at the next one. The photo was of the same man now standing a bit closer. The girl flipped through the next several photos quickly. With each one the man in the picture came a bit closer and his features were a bit clearer. Turning the last corner to her house, the girl noticed that the man in the photos seems to be looking at her even when she moved the stack from side to side. It frightened her, but she kept flipping them over, one by one. By the nineteenth picture, the man was so close his face completely filled the frame. His expression was the most horrifying the girl had ever seen. Walking up the driveway, she turned to the last photo. This time, instead of an image, there were two words: “Close enough.” Hearing a scream, the girl’s brother rushed to the door and opened it. All he saw was a pile of photographs lying on the doorstep. The top one looked like an extremely pale version of his sister, but she was standing too far back for him to be sure.

  1. This is not an original idea; there’s a Japanese urban legend/ghost story thingy that’s exactly the same. But oh well, it’s an interesting story either way.

  2. I wrote a stor kind of like this in middle school, but instead of a stack of photos, the ghostly guy was standing closer and closer every time the main character saw him, and at the end she took his place. It kind of sucked. This was creep though.

  3. Actually I think this is a revised version of the Japanese horror TV series 世にも奇妙な物語(which basically means Unusual story) which began airing in 2000(or was it 1990?).
In the original series the end was that the last picture showed only the man’s torso, and as the girl put it back into her lap, she found the man’s grey dead face staring up at her between her legs.
The episode ends here, which is a load more scary than this version. I freaked out at the last scene and threw my headphones into the screen.
For anyone who want to shit pants, I strongly recommend this show, my fav was the one about the elevator, and the one about the woman being harassed in her home.
Have fun, and remember, headphones and sound on, please.
Even Candlejack will be scared by the episode when th

  4. This has gotta be one of my personal favorites because it always reminds me of the time when I picked up this really strange-looking pic of a lady while I was walking along the street. I threw it away when I noticed her expression was so…mysterious. In a bad way.

  5. Alright, the imaging of the picture went from the guy in the Rituals picture, and then slowly to Christopher Walken in a hat and trenchcoat. o_O

…What?! After I’ve seen two movies with him in it, he kind of sticks out. ><
Though, wait… Does this mean the brother’s about to get murdered by his own sister?

    10/10

  6. This story reminds me of this one time where a boy came up to me and shoved a picture of a doll in my face and then changed it to a close up of the dolls face. the doll was sitting in a window. the Polaroids were slightly out of focus. It said Jessica and the other said kill.
    Freaky shiz man.

  7. This chick is retarted, there is only 20 pictures but she managed to take the whole time walking to her home from school to look at them all? Stupid woman, get back in the polaroid kitchen.

  8. A little predictable (or is it just me who’s read tons of these) but really creepy good. Will work especially well if told out loud to your friends as you move..closer, and closer.

And that’s one evil vengeful sister! She’s gonna get her brother next. So guys, be careful and treat your siblings nicer and they’ll go to someone else when this happens.

  9. kinda reminds me of the story where a bot picks up the photo and there was a cute girl holding up her hand in what looked like a peace sign but then she kills him and instead of two fingers she holds up 3

  10. I love Polaroid Cameras. It sucks that they don’t make the film for them any more…
    {or at least that’s what I’ve been told…}

  11. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

Reminds me of the story with the girl in the photo holding up the peace sign, then three fingers after the boy got ran over. Yeeeeah.

  12. I love this game. I play it every once in a while, and it’s just a little something that I do when I have a few minutes everyday.
I thought I would share it with you guys.

Basically you go around doing crimes and training at the gym.
Trust me, it may seem pointless and stupid at first, but it’s actually a lot of fun.
You can buy houses, buy and sell on the stock market once you play long enough, invest in the bank, buy cars and race them, or even kidnap the major haha.

Anyone heard of Torn City before?

  13. Syrange – I know, it did remind me of the little girl with the two fingers, then the three…
But that’s probably why I liked this one!

    YAY!
    Good pasta!

  14. This was far too predictable. It was obvious what was going to happen from the description of the first photo.

    Although WHO WAS DRIVEWAY?!

  15. damn. when i originally left my WHO WAS BROTHER?, there were only 2 comments. i read it now and theres like 4 who was brother?’s before me.

    i apologize.

  16. Man in pictures from trash

MWUAHAHA.Every time some one is stupid enough to come to the last photo he takes his place and so on and so on.

  17. i ahve a question, how come everytime someone mentions …well…Mr.C as we shall call him, there sentence never finishes, but they still manage to send the comment???????

  18. Creepy, but it reminds me a little much like the one with the cute girl in the picture holding up a finger for every person she’s killed.

  19. It was a good idea, but the writing style seemed a bit bland, which took too much away from the creepiness. The sentence that bothered me the most was “His expression was the most horrifying the girl had ever seen.” Well, too bad for the girl, then. But it doesn’t provide a clear enough image for the reader. What kind of expression WAS it, exactly?

  20. The Person Formerly Known as 'Noneya'

    But WHO WAS PHOTOGRAPHER??!!
    WHO WAS BROTHER??!!
    WHO WAS GIRL??!!
    WHO WAS PILE??!!

Okay, I think I got them all.

  21. I saw Murders and Deaths and was hoping the girl had her entrails graphically torn out.
    Oh well.
I mean, you don’t really KNOW she was murdered; maybe she was sucked into the photos or something.

  22. if the man was looking at the shutter while the pictures were taken, then no shit it would look like he was looking at her. silly xD

  23. Nice the idea of haunted photo frames is good indeed.I enjoyed this pasta and I would like to hear more from this author.

  24. so what happens to the guy when he gets the girl? is he free? dont look like it. what does he get from it?

    evil pictures…evil pictures…

  25. Pretty good! I liked it. The wrap had just the right amount of vagueness, but also the right amount of knowing what’s coming.
