The “Hooray, Ratings Work Again!” Giveaway – Winner Contacted

Estimated reading time — 2 minutes

Hey, everyone!

It’s been a few days since I implemented the fix – special thanks to CloudFlare tech support for figuring it out after everyone else I’d approached had been baffled – and it appears that we are fully in the clear with regards to the ratings plugin. I haven’t received any reports of malfunctions, and I’m seeing people voting like crazy in the logs, so I think it’s safe to say that we dodged a bullet and everything is finally back in working order!

To celebrate, I’m going to hold a giveaway! I’d been thinking about raffling off this particular item for awhile now as I thought it might be a fun way for some of you to render your creepypasta into a new form – so, no time like the present, right?

One winner will receive a Steam copy of TyranoBuilder Visual Novel Studio. This is a program that allows users to build their own visual novels, even without knowing any game programming or scripting (though the description states that more in-depth options exist for advanced users).

I’ve really enjoyed the few times that we’ve received submissions in interesting formats/platforms like Twine – and I’ve seen some authors express interest in turning their work into games or visual novels, so it’s my hope that some of you find this an interesting opportunity to tell your stories in a non-traditional fashion. While I’m only giving away one copy, I think it would absolutely be interesting to see future submissions or adaptations of already accepted stories (with permission and/or by the original author, of course) in this format!

  1. The last version of the plugin allowed me to fully ‘lock’ a post so that some types of posts (announcements, contests, etc) would never display the ratings block, even when the index template called for it.

However, for some reason this function has been removed. This means that having the ratings block on the index allows even posts that I’ve supposedly disabled ratings on to still be rated. This is a problem (for now, at least) because the widget that allows me to create the “highest rated” lists in the footer/sidebar is SUPPOSED to allow me to filter by category (thus, I would be able to filter out any announcements/etc from the list), but in practice that field is glitched and does nothing. Unfortunately, I know that expecting the community at large to simply NOT vote on those posts when the option exists is unrealistic, but I also don’t want to deal with the blowback if non-pastas start appearing in the top rated lists because of the comnbination of that bug + people being unable to stop themselves from voting on non-pastas. For the brief time where I had the ratings block on the front page, those non-pasta posts were getting a ton of votes already for whatever reason, so that would be the inevitable outcome.

For now, it’s just cleaner to keep the ratings block on the individual post’s page. If either one of the above issues is solved by the dev, then the issue becomes moot and we can have them on the front page again. I am not sure if he is working on either issue, though. All I can do his is request he considers them.

  2. I agree with Russian Sleep Experiment. I could see that one being good.
The one I’d want is 11 Miles though. That one would be brilliant.

  3. The sleep experiment would be a good one for me, as well as a number of the better ritual pastas. I like those. The Flesh Market would be really cool to see.

And see…there you go. Leadership. After all the stress and negativity you give credit to the company that fixed it, and then reward your authors. Well done Derp! Be sure to also reward yourself with a glass (or bottle) of something cold and toast your good work. Cheers!
