The Dog’s Lick

Estimated reading time — 2 minutes

A young girl is left home alone with only her dog to protect her. When night approaches, she locks all the doors and tries to lock all the windows, but one won’t close. She decides to leave it unlocked and goes to bed. Her dog takes its customary place under her bed.

In the deep of night she awakens to a dripping sound coming from the bathroom. The girl is too scared to go check so she reaches her hand under the bed. She feels a reassuring lick from her dog and falls back to sleep. She reawakens to the dripping sound, reaches her hand down to the dog where she feels the reassuring lick and falls back to sleep. Once more she awakens to the dripping sound. She reaches her hand down and feels the lick of her dog.

Now curious about the dripping sound, she gets up and slowly walks towards the bathroom, the dripping sound getting louder as she approaches. She reaches the bathroom and turns on the light. She is greeted by a horrific sight; hanging from the shower nozzle is her dog, with its throat slit open and its blood dripping into the bathtub.

Something on the bathroom mirror catches her eye she turns around. Written on the bathroom mirror in her dog’s blood are the words “HUMANS CAN LICK TOO”.

I remember reading a version of this when I was in grade school, except I think the girl was at a slumber party and the murderer killed all the girls except her (why he spared just her, who knows). It freaked me out for days, and I didn’t even have a dog at the time! So for the sake of nostalgia, here you go. Thanks go out to the person who emailed this to me.

  1. You know, when I first read this story I almost fell off my freaking chair to the “HUMANS CAN LICK TOO” part. I couldn’t gather myself for weeks! I hate to say it, but whoever got this horrifying idea deserves a job as a Hollywood writer

    hater69:
So this dog can wright and hates people?? Or something so he killed him self because he is tired of licking? Are you fucking kidding me 1/10 because i imagind the girl was a hot chick

No, you idiot! A psycho snuck into the house, killed the dog, left the dog in the bathroom, wrote the message, hid under the girl’s bed, then licked her hand whenever she reached under her bed! How can you possibly not figure that out?!

  3. omg lolz

my friend told me this story(but she didn’t tell it right XD)
and now i read this onennnnn and its AWESHOME

(yeah byochs. Slender girl is real.)

Have you never read this urban legend before? I remember my sister telling me the story when I was in kindergarten, and it freaked me out then. It’s what got me into urban legends. The end line is there to add to the creepiness, because deep down everyone has a fear of being murdered in their own home, and it brings you back to the childhood memory of the monster under the bed, only the monster isn’t the stereotypical kind. The monster is the real life kind: humans.

I have never had any fear of dying at all. I would quite happily let jigsaw, candlejack, jeff the killer and freddy krougar into my hou

  5. Wait a minute… I’ve seen this in a cartoon when I was younger, except the dog wasn’t slaughtered. He was found in some room where he was making the scratching noise the girl was hearing.

  6. I loved this, I have two dogs my self and always count on them to protect me if I ever need help. This just changed my whole perspective on life…..
Next time, check to see whats licking you under the bed. Oh and where the fuck are her parents anyways?

  7. This was my first time on this site. I actually found the story on a friend’s twitter page and then googled it and found this site.
It wasn’t all that scary but it did freak me out and the I love the ending. I want to read more on this story.

  8. So this dog can wright and hates people?? Or something so he killed him self because he is tired of licking? Are you fucking kidding me 1/10 because i imagind the girl was a hot chick

  9. It becomes less frightening when the unknown aggressor identifies him/herself as being human. The last line kind of ruins it because of that. Humans aren’t very scary in these kinds of stories to begin with… I could even tolerate the last line if it had been less revealing, maybe saying “It isn’t just dogs that lick” or something along those lines… Maybe it’s just me, but I liked it until the end.

  10. I had a young bloodhound pup that slept next 2 my bed but he jumps on me in bed if theres an intruder :P i safe unless my dog crushes me under him

  11. I remember this story when I was little! Scared the living crap out of me. First night I heard it, I slept with my parents. Unfortunately, they have a bathroom conjoined with the room, and I swear that, at one moment, I heard something dripping in the middle of the night.

  12. My sister told me this story when I was younger. At first it scared me, but then I remembered that my dog was a German shepherd and fully capable of protecting me.

  13. Anyone who kills a dog for pleasure will hear from me. Mind you,I have two lazy beagles of my own that wouldn’t protect me from anything. If I were about to be murdered, they’d lazily lift their head and the go back to sleep.

  14. Funny, the one I heard was about an old woman hearing a legend about a witch in the neighborhood. She goes to sleep but wore she tells her apparently witch-detecting dog to lick her hand once if the witch was on the street, twice of she was in the yard, and three times inside the house. Throughout the night, she feels the first, then two, then three. At three she springs up and runs to hide in the bathroom. In the bathroom her dog is dead and something creepy is written on the mirror indicating it was the witch licking her hand.

Weird how stories can spread through a culture.

  15. It’s all right everyone, I’m alright. Turns out Ruffus had rabies, and the nice man saw him about to bite me while I was asleep, so he came into my house through the open window and subdued my dog. He was forced to kill Ruffus though. The man licked my hand throughout the night as an attempt to comfort me until my parents got home. In the end, I found out the man who saved me is a good friend of my dad’s. He visits now every so often ^.^

  16. Master Buttcheek

Dudes, I have a chihuahua who sleeps in my bed an a cat. I have to worry about leprechauns, not normal people you lucky bastards. Those slimy little drunk devils…

  17. Someone told me this story. She told me she heard it in Ecuador. It was told slightly differently and honestly it was a bit creepier when she told it to me.

  18. Someone told me this story. She told me she heard it in Ecuador. It was told slightly differently and honestly it was a bit creepier when she told it to me.

  19. I remember this story, and I knew it was bound to pop up eventually around here. This story freaked me the F out when I was younger, and is the main reason I don’t have a bed that things can crawl under (That, and the 6th Sense, where the little girl grabs the kids ankle from underneath the bed. *shudders*)

Anyways, yes it’s old. But at least it was well written :)

  20. The dog’s head hung on the mirror, it’s blood smeared above and below it to form the words:

    “ORDER PIZZA”

    “PAY WITH SNAKES”

  21. this has always been one of my favorite scary storys
it always manages to freak at least one person out when i tell it :)
in my version though she turns around and theres a creepy guy with red eyes staring at her and licking his lips…..creepy :D

  22. They actually had this on a Australian horror show for children. There was an accompanying cartoon and everything. I was about 5 at the time.

  23. i really liked this

i like this, i remembering hearing it before, also i loved when i seen how many comments there were, it said 69, that made me laugh..also there were many different versions of this story, but i’ll read this one for good memories :)

  24. This is much better without the ending. When you have to think about it, and you get chills up your spine with the realisation that its a person licking her hand.

  25. @shortys roc my sox

Your comments are [choose one, I don’t care: annoying/stupid/unintelligent/unnecessary] and you should just stop commenting.

You complain about people swearing, which isn’t that bad. People will fucking swear whenever the hell they want and they don’t give a damn what you think about swearing.

Then, you butt into an argument that wasn’t yours to interfere with.

Your comments are grammatically horrifying and you should learn how to speak and write in English.

If you can’t say anything nice or constructive or generally acceptable, just stop voicing your “opinion,” if your mess of jumbled words and conformist ideas can be considered opinions.

  26. I remember this. In the version I read, the girl is sick and stays home alone with her dog while her sister goes out. Turns out her sister never left; her sister was murdered while the sick girl slept, and the murderer killed her dog and crept under the bed.

  27. Wow. So. More than anything, that just made me sad. It’s gross and makes me want to hug my dog.

    Kudos!

    I give it a B.

  28. This is retarded the one i heard is that people break into the girls house and she is upstairs and than she calls the police and the police show up (and all along she has been gettin reassuring licks from her dog ,even though her dog was downstairs) when the police get there they tell the girl that the people killed her dog then she is like NO! he was under my bed licking my hand and than the police say “People can lick too”. This version isnt right as i heard it because i heard it 4 years ago but whatever i like this one better than that one.

  29. 1: good, but predictable

2: maybe it’s cause i have a Labrador, but dog and people tongues feel nothing alike

3: if someone ever killed MY dog in pasta, the pasta would change to what i did to them

  30. TheMagicalLetterR

Shit I can’t sleep now, good story I love this classic, but I always fear that this’ll happen to me.

  31. She’s supposed to call the cops, they find the dead dog then she tells the cop that it couldnt have been hers because her dog had been licking her hand all night.

Then the cop says “Humans can lick too”

The message in blood is dumb and unbelievable.

  32. I first heard this one as a Jersey Devil story, so it’s really not all that creepy to me.
“The Jersey Devil can lick hands too”

  33. This one is kinda sick. That must be a real mindfuck.
Mind you, if the guy who killed the dog is that screwed up, you wouldn’t have long to worry about it after…

  34. German girl here. I heard this story years ago when I was in a summer camp, but the whole mood of it and especially the ending were far more creepy than this version. Somebody already mentioned in the comments that the last sentence totally ruins it, and I have to agree.
Nonetheless, this is a classic. It creeped me out for weeks after first hearing it.

    Lizs last blog post..SUB-Vorstellung

  35. that is some scary crap!! if that happend to me i would freek and leave my house and never come back and i would never look back. and you should all know that i am making a good point!!!

  36. what would be funny is if the mirror said BUT WHO WAS HAND LICKER? also, 3 possible ending
    1. couldnt he just grab her ankle when she got off the bed
    2. it was her dad and he got a her a new dog and the old one was a robot
    3. shes dumb and looked under the bed and says “I didn’t know that”

2nd doesnt make sense but neither does the guy not killing her

  37. Um for the record, the last paragraph does in fact make sense..
She sees something ONNN the bathroom mirror out the corner of her eye,so she turns around fully TO LOOK AT IT to see the writing properly.

    ft.

  38. No, dude, it’s scary because of what it implies is waiting for you after you find the note in blood.

I freaked the fuck out. I think the ending, although a little messed up wording wise, was amazing. It fucked me up just because it’s so menacing. Someone was watching you, knowing that’s what you did, and planned this out just to make it especially horrifying. Putting your trust in the psychopath under your bed that’s pretending to be your dog, licking your hand, and then finding the dog you trusted to protect you dead in the bathroom and knowing the person who killed it and posed as it was waiting just outside the door for you…

No matter what age you are, that’s fucked.

  39. shortys roc my sox

    @ Uncle Anon,

this is stupid so some one has an opinnion and you just get pissed off and argue it were supossed 2 post comentes bout if we like the story or not if DJLo0Na doesn’t like a part of the story thats his opinnion. what if i said Anon is a really wierd name are u gonna get mad it me 4 haveing an opinnion

  40. sorry uncle anon
i guess that response was kind of rude of me
i just don’t see why an opinion i have can ‘manage to piss you off’
    i’ll try and be a little less…me
    and well i guess that’s it…=\
    sorry again

  41. @ uncle anon
sorry but i really don’t care if what i say pisses you off
it’s called an opinion and i can complain if i want; if you don’t like it well then i’m sorry…just omit my comment from your memory
    it really isn’t that hard.
    l8er

  42. @ DJ LoONa

Idk why, but your comments always manage to piss me off. Stop complaining, or use your time and money to pay for the site that you seem not to like :/.

  43. *creepy!*

I’m laying on my bed in the dark right now!
One of my dogs sleeps in the bed, the other sleeps in a cage in the bedroom.
    But still creepy!!

  44. shortys roc my sox

omg my dog licks my hand like that and i here dripping in the bathroom next 2 my room crap theres a person under my bed licking my hand at night

  45. Man, I first heard this one when I was a kid. (Aaah, slumber parties.) Scared the shit out of me.

Now, I’m 18 and it STILL creeps me out! I have a nice little poodle who sleeps by me at night and occasionally licks me. Plus there’s a bathroom right off my bedroom… O_O

Crap, there goes tonight’s sleep. XD

  46. Bad ending in my opinion. This is how I would have ended it.

Written on the bathroom mirror in her dog’s blood are the words “LOLCATS can lick too”

  47. Igets it...Sorta

I always thought that the last message meant the girl was supposed to lick back or something, but now relaize that doesnt make sense. So, it all comes toghter now. Yay!

  48. …so…whoever killed her dog just sat under her bed and kept licking her hand?…LAME!
btw the last two sentences make NO sense…something in the bathroom mirror catches her eye, so she turns around and loox at the bathroom mirror???
    plz fix
    k thanx

  49. I’ve heard one where the girl is babysitting two kids and the dog and the murderer got the three and left the sitter, and the note said “Not only a dog can lick your hand at night” O_o

  50. When I first heard this story when I was a kid it scared the every living shit out of me. To be honest, it still kinda has that effect.

  51. LALALALALA.... THE DEVIL!!

Ahah, my friend told me this story before
Except like she added some little details in, about how the girl had just moved into a new house and she got a whole floor to herself, including the bathroom, but she didn’t like the bathroom so she went and used her parents… And since she was so afraid her parents got her a dog
And supposedly, the dripping went on for like a week…
And the face that she told me that it was a real story and I was seven freaked me out too
    xD

  52. I hate to point this out, but it says “Something on the bathroom mirror catches her eye she turns around”.
I didn’t notice it the first time.

  53. I believe the slumber party one is where the girl is left alive because it’s her birthday; written on the wall with what is presumably the other girls blood is something like “Happy Birthday from your local psychopath”.

I love the last sentence, when I first read this a while ago, I shuddered and a chill went down my spine.

This is much better written than the other version I read – there’s also one about a blind woman. She calls her nephew over to sort the dripping out, and he discovers the mauled dog.

    I agree with comment #14!

  54. I’ve never quite gotten that “There were no foot prints in the snow. It was his reflection” one. It’s such a difficult mistake to make.

  55. Dude…I read this one in I think …Teen magazine when I was something like 15. Scared me for life, along with the “There were no foot prints in the snow. It was his reflection” one.

        1. “You’re*on the Internet*. Define it yourself*.”..
          You’re on the internet…learn how to write/type/spell….

      1. nostalgia, to have a positive feeling because of something that reminds you of a situation you were in, or something you remember. hope that makes sense to someone other than me :3

  56. This one I have heard before and it is a classic. It’s more silly then scary though but if I was a little kid I would say it would be scary.

  57. Dumb bitch couldn’t even tell the difference between me and some human. WTF?

It’s not like the facial structure and tongue are completely different, is it?

Nah, this one is a classic. Silly, but a classic. I still like the version where the dog barks from outside while she’s still got her hand down getting licked, though. Leaves on a slightly more horrifying note.

  58. I’ve always loved this creppypasta, but the end sentence in this sort of ruins the mood.
I think you should take it off to keep us wondering what was under the bed.

      1. Well yeah, it’d feel different-
But honestly if the girl is super young a wet tongue is a wet tongue. She may not be able to tell.

      2. Well, let me think. My dog has a wet tongue and sleeps under my bed.I wake up in the middle of the night and something under the bed licks my hand with a wet tongue. It must be a human. Its common sense. Normal people always lick peoples hands.(Yes, this was sarcastic.)
