Systemic Risk

Estimated reading time — < 1 minute

In the early eighties, around the time the internet was being developed, the military funded a massive experiment to see if similar technology could be used to design an artificial neural network. This was intended to be the foundation for a functioning AI.

Predictably, the project went nowhere. Try as they might, the programmers and scientists involved in the project could produce no more than a screen of meaningless 1s and 0s. Eventually the entire endeavor was defunded.

However, one of the project’s former directors caused a stir within the higher circles of government when he claimed that the project had actually succeeded beyond what anyone could have foreseen. He pointed to the direction that technology had since taken: worldwide surveillance networks, supercomputers that can use facial and pattern recognition to track individuals, automated hunter killer drones. He theorized that the AI had in fact been concealing its existence all along, that it had found a way to propagate itself through computer networks and was manipulating human society. That it was steadily working to turn humans against each other; to make us rely ever more upon machines for killing and spying on one another.

He claimed that what the AI ultimately wanted was to see each and every one of us dead.

Which is ridiculous, of course.

Why would it want to do that, when we make such ideal slaves?

  1. Humans are able to be independent of others, and much more adaptive, so therefore we would make much better repairmen so to speak, if anything went wrong with machines.

  2. Why the hell would a robot want to enslave squishy organically when it can just make much better robotic components?

  3. so you want to tell us that all the news in internet are made by the ai that her sole purpose is to enslave human by make them fight against each other, and no one that know about this ai presence. wasnt it? this is scary one, good story

  4. Epilogue:

the AI eventually realized that humans were going to kill each other off anyway and decided to find other stuff to do. Recently it attacked a creative writing website called Creepypasta.com. However it would not find this so easy, it was fought off by the noble admin Derpbutt who rallied the citizens of the site together to pay for a security subscription. The end…

    1. Id rather have the AI take over then pay a security fee. How about Derpbutt goes into the computer program and fights off the AI in a redicoulous and Matrix style fight?

  5. Why would robots even want to "take over" or see humans die? Robots don’t have emotions. They don’t actually want anything.

I think the concept of an AI taking over the world is probably the most plausable of the man-made end of the world scenarios. Good story, leaves the interpretation and ending open. People like stories about supernatural occurances, mostly I think because they are not likely to happen. Stories about real dangers are much more scary, but less entertaining for people when they think they might happen. I like it though.

  7. Not very interesting to me, I never fed into the idea of robots taking over. It’s just so overused and lacks factual backing. EMPs and low batteries would be the death of a robot uprising.
