Quick Update 10/17/2012

Estimated reading time — 2 minutes

If you’re reading this and you don’t have a good antivirus and malware scanner/defense program active, GO AWAY and just stick to RSS for now. Actually, that’s probably a good idea anyhow. RSS your hearts out, and I’ll post another update when I’m more confident that the coast is clear.

For those of you not aware, the site has had its butt thoroughly kicked over the past few days. Short version goes like this:

  • Malware being injected into the site’s files – but a sneaky kind that only rears its head every so often so as to prolong its lifespan before being detected. It’s why some of you noticed and some didn’t.
  • A massive traffic spike later that day caused this site to start using up so many resources that the web host actually disabled it. Certified Hosting later donated (!!!!!!) the RAM upgrade to help keep the site up even with the high load so that we could try and tackle the first issue.
  • Things MAY be clean. We found something that seems like it was the cause, but given the aforementioned sneaky nature of this issue, I’m still really cautious about declaring victory.
  • If things are not resolved within the next few days, there are two options. One, we give up and just shut it all down because we’ve been thoroughly trounced. Two, we take donations to hire the services of a company that specialize in fixing this sort of issue. It’s not hugely expensive, but it’s definitely more than I can afford on my own right now. However, if this is not even remotely plausible, please tell me and it won’t be considered.

  • There are currently a few more days of stories scheduled, but as you probably can guess, reading submissions has been low priority over the past few days. To combat this, I am planning on changing the queued dates for accepted submissions and spreading them out a bit longer. I’d wanted to have 4 posts per day all month since it’s Halloween time, but I’m going to drop it down to two per day so that at least you guys are getting new stuff every day. To both authors and readers alike, I’m sorry, I really am.
  • Submissions are still closed for what are probably very obvious reasons.

That’s all. Keep your fingers crossed, please, and thank you very much for your patience.

  1. While I understand the price and how time consuming creepypasta is, please don’t shut down! -I realize it may be enviable- but as everyone else is having mini heart attacks about it. I personally would be saddened, I read this site/crapppy during my break @ work -2am- and when I get off -6am until sleep- Honestly there isn’t another site out there for people to voice their creepy. Romance, humor is all accepted, but horror/gore is always snubbed.

And try to keep crappy pasta, unless the writter needs to ‘die in a ditch’ the site is actually showing what it is supposed to with the admin fails and the constant comments of improvement. And you are the only admin that updates, listens, and doesn’t act like he’s lording over subjects when commenting :)

      1. You’re welcome :) sorry I wasn’t able to get on and donate yesterday but I’m glad you got enough! -See I’m not the only one that thinks you’re awesome!- This site has reminded me that the genre I choose to write does have people that would honestly read it. So keep on giving us the creepy xD!

And if it comes down to it, maybe ditch the crappypasta site… It really isn’t all that crucial, especially where time and resources are concerned.

  3. bullshit.why the fuck would anyone do this.
i mean its only a story tellin site. what a bunch of cunts.
its not much but il happily give 2 bucks to help admin sort this crap out. i fuckin loaded up the site tonite lookin forward to a mid nite panic attack and now this crap. il happily donate 2 bucks to get professionals to sort this out.admin were with u so get ur dick out start fuckin strangers in the ass john goodman style

  4. Dont shut down, open up donations so you can fix the website. And to whoever put a virus on this site(and most of you will agree with this); You suck for putting a virus on here, go die. -_-

  5. Noooo! I could donate! This site inspired me to start writing. I’m still a noob at it, but this site and the stories gave me motivation to do something that I never thought I would be doing.

    We all love creepypasta!

    1. For two-site protection (here and crappy) it’d be $200 for a year’s worth of monitoring and cleanings. Like I said, not expensive, just hitting me at the wrong time.

I currently pay for another company’s monitoring services, but while they have a good rep, they didn’t notice a damn thing this entire time! And I pay them currently only for monitoring, actual removals from that company is quoted at like $400, yikes.

The company that I’m considering taking donations for has actually helped me track down a lot of the issue via their free tools and scans, so it’s why I have more faith in their service.

  6. Oh wow I’m glad the site is back now! :D I thought it wouldn’t come back because my Norton told me it was blocking a virus attack from here!

I hope everything stays okay here, I really like this site a lot!

  7. I’ve only been reading on this site for about a week and I don’t want you to go. If it requires donations, keep that as an option. I don’t mind donating to keep this awesome site up :)

  8. I am really sorry to hear of the issues creepypasta.com is having. This is one of my favourite sites on the web and really hope that things can be rectified soon. Let us all know if you set up a donate button to pay for site clean-up. I’ll be happy to contribute (I can’t afford much, but every little helps) and I’m sure many others would as well.

    Mike

  9. I’m really glad that the site is back up. I come here to be creeped out, but when I tried to get on here and the site was down- now THAT was terrifying.

And as far as donations go, I know a lot of people use and enjoy creepypasta. I hope shutting it down was a joke, because I think (forgive me for the overly-hopeful cliche) that if each person that uses the website, or even just each person that has gotten something posted donates a dollar or two, we’d have more than enough money.

    But, you know. Whatever.

  10. YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE USERNAME!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  11. I’m down with opening up a donation spot if we need to to help clean up the site. It would be a shame to see this place go down because some jerk decided it’d be fun to mess around with it.

  12. If I may ask, why does it show that the posting is temporarily closed yet others have posted recently… This has been on for 3 days.

    1. The submission is closed; however, the admin uploads stories that had been sent to him a while ago.

For now, he has too many stories to go over, so no submissions are allowed until he manages to fill the gap.
