Listen To The Clock

Estimated reading time — 6 minutes

If you want to lose your grasp on reality, and destroy your complete sanity, just listen to the clock.

But this will not be easy let me tell you right now. This is not something to mess around with. It’s just an easy way to lose your mind within the confines of your own home. But there are a couple guidelines to follow. First, pick a room with no windows. It can be a room for anything, but it just can’t have windows. Second, you can start at any time in the day, even if you wish to start at night, for the process will take exactly 24 hours to complete. Third, cancel all appointments you have for that day, turn off your phone if you have to, for there can’t be any distractions for you to focus on. Fourth, make sure it is a calm and quiet day outside, and not windy or storming outside. Lastly, to start the process, you must go into the room you picked, put a clock inside (the clock must make the distinct ‘tick-tock’ sound when every second passes), turn off the lights, and light a candle. That candle will be your only source of light. Once you have done all of that, I honestly want you to ask yourself one question, “Do I really want to do this?” If your answer is yes, then may God have mercy on you. I’m here to merely prepare you on what to expect. Alright, let me tell you a little bit of information about the procedure. Back in the mid-1800’s, radical members of the Christian, Muslim, and Islamic faith used it as a way to “connect” with God. It was kept under wraps due to its extreme nature and unusual method to connect with the supernatural. The clock represented life on earth, and how short it can be, and the candle represented God as the only way of guidance through life. Most often than not, each person that would go through the procedure, would lose their minds and within a day and due to their insane actions, would kill themselves from what they claim to have seen. But if you were one of the lucky ones, you can keep your sanity, like me. Ok, now here is what to expect.

The first 3 hours are the least eventful, mainly because nothing really happens, but prepare yourself in these hours. These are the only hours in which you may choose to leave the procedure.

In the 4th hour, you will not be able to escape by any means. The lock on your door will lock by itself and you will have no way to move it.

In the 5th hour, you will start to sweat profusely, and will start to have feelings of anxiety. You will start to look behind you many times, and every time, there will be nothing there.

In the 6th hour, you will hear noises. Not noises from the house or from outside, but thuds and thumps throughout the hour in ten minute intervals. With each noise getting louder.

In the 7th hour, you will pass out, and dream. But this will be the only pleasant hour throughout the process. You will dream about the best moments in your life. Every great accomplishment, wonderful memory, and friend you have made will appear before you. It will have been the best dream you have ever had in your life. Even events from the future can appear.

At the beginning of the 8th hour, you shall wake up. But when you do, you will feel an extreme sense of elation and comfort, similar the effects of smoking marijuana. Now for some this could be considered another pleasant hour, but what comes after will be the start of your suffering.

In the 9th hour, you will, in a sense, go from one drug, to another. Your feelings of elation will change to that of extreme adrenaline and energy. Similar to the effects of any stimulant drug. But a warning, you must try your hardest to keep yourself under control. You’re unpredictable, there is no telling what you will do in this state.

In the 10th hour, hopefully you have minimal injuries from the last hour. But now you will start to feel normal, and your feelings you previously felt will subside. Now you will hear screaming, but the screaming can vary from what it sounds like, from a little girl, to a full grown man. You will hear screaming at six minute intervals throughout the hour. This hour is going to feel like an eternity to pass.

At the 11th hour, the light from the candle will go out. That’s it. You are left alone in the darkness. You are free to think to yourself, most likely regretting the decision you have made.

At the 12th hour, the light from the candle will reappear. But do not worry, this is another hour of silence. But mentally prepare yourself for what you about to experience next.

In the 13th hour, you shall pass out, much like you did in the 7th hour. But don’t expect happy memories. In this dream, you shall experience every painful moment, suffering, and unpleasant thing in your life all over again. Even suffering in the future, including your own death. This will be the worst dream you will ever have in your life.

At the 14th hour, you will wake up. This is another hour of silence. But the silence will be broken by your own sobbing. Your tears shall continue until the hour is over.

In the 15th hour, this is putting it very bluntly, is when things start to get weird. You will talk to someone. He’s not visible, but he is there. He doesn’t have a name, but I’m giving him one. He is your guardian angel, but you can call him ‘Watcher’ or ‘Protector’. But for me, I call him ‘Asshole’. This may seem funny, but trust me, it’s suits him. The first thing he will say to you is “Ask me anything, and I shall give you an answer.” You can ask him anything about your life, what will happen in the future, and why events occurred when they did. He will give you an answer, but extreme and graphic details, and give reasons for things will not understand, whether it be a tragedy or a death. By the end of the hour, he will say “Farewell” and leave.

In the 16th hour, you will talk to your parents. But they do not make a physical appearance mind you. Now it’s your turn to answer questions. They will ask you questions about what you have done with your life, and if you do not answer one of their questions, they will press on for an answer until you can’t take it anymore. At the end of the hour, they will go away.

At the 17th hour, you will talk to the most important guy in your life, whether it be your significant other or your best friend. He will ask you why and how you became friends. But keep in mind, he is not looking for friendly conversation, he is questioning your friendship with him. Finding every mistake you have done to cripple your friendship with him. Reasoning with him will not work, and will act like your parents did in the previous hour.

At the 18th hour, you will speak to the most important girl in your life, whether it be your significant other or your best friend. She will do the same as the person in the 17th hour did, and ask the same questions.

At the 19th hour, you will talk with yourself. Meaning you will talk with your future self, and trust me, this is the least pleasant conversation. He will tell you things you will not want to hear about yourself, and will ask you questions you can and can’t answer. Soon it will be too much, and you will find yourself screaming at yourself, and anger and self-loathing will be the only emotion you will have.

In the 20th hour, following the events of the 19th hour, you will find any possibility to hurt yourself. Self-inflicting pain will be constant in this hour. Some have even committed suicide in this hour.

In the 21st hour, if you managed to survive the previous hour, here is what will await you. Music. Yes, music. It will be soft orchestral music, with a choir singing Gregorian Chant, similar to church music, but more beautiful. By the end of this hour, your wounds will heal. Don’t ask me why, even I don’t know.

In the 22nd hour, the music will stop. This is another hour of silence. But you have time to think to yourself. The light on the candle will change colors, all colors of the spectrum. This quite a sight to behold, it’s almost soothing.

In the 23rd hour, you will sing Gregorian Chant. But your singing will be the only sound in the room. You honestly don’t know what your singing, but it sounds beautiful, and you will actually want to sing more.

Finally, the 24th hour, this is the most interesting hour. Rumor says you talk to God himself, but here is how it goes. You are pinned to the floor by some unknown force, and someone or something asks you a question at ten minute intervals. Questions like “Are you happy?” or “Would you like to change?”. You must answer, you will feel the need to. The questioner sounds like a man, but at the same time sounds like an animal. Almost like the roar of a lion. His voice is terrifying but yet comforting at the same time. After the hour is up you will be able to get up, and the door will unlock. If you’re lucky, you still have your sanity.

Now it up to you what you shall do with this information. If you want to do this, I’m not stopping you, but I’m giving you fair warning. Some things are beyond the realms of human comprehension and sometimes we just have nothing to explain the unnatural. But whatever it is, at least we know we are not alone. Now remember what I have told you. If you want to lose your grasp on reality, and destroy your complete sanity, just listen to the clock.

  1. I believe the true question is is it actually true, the person that wrote this telling and wrote what actually happened to them, I believe in this stuff, and would actually try it out, but if you see this comment I would like your opinions and answers if you actually do this stuff or not?

  2. Nathan Peterson

So creepy, about 2 sentences in the clock became the only sound in the room. Dang subconscious!

  3. @this story: Why are you using he/him pronouns for everything? Why are you referring to my best friend, who is a girl, and me, who is likewise, with those pronouns?

Let me break something to you. There are these words called them/their.

    They’re gender-neutral. Shocking, I know.

    1. As a gender neutral individual myself, I often struggle with the choice between the supposedly gender neutral pronouns of them/their and my commitment to proper English grammar. “Them/their” are in the third person plural, while “it” is the truly gender neutral (while dehumanizing) third person singular. “It” is problematic for obvious reasons.

I’m not defending the sexism inherent in this approach, but using the pronoun “he” is how the English language has traditionally handled referring to a singular subject of unknown gender in the third person. I have no idea if the author knows this tidbit, but it’s something to consider before leaving a harshly worded comment.

On top of that, I’d love to know where you saw the author refer to you/the reader as “he.” It didn’t stand out to me, but I could easily have missed it since I typically speed read my pasta.

  4. Guys; this worked, to an extent.
No, I didn’t talk to God or anything like that. But I could feel something…tweaking (for lack of a better term) my mind.
The “locking door” is vague- I’m sure I could’ve opened it, if I could have gotten up. And that was the interesting thing…starting this ritual and going through with it, the entire time I had an almost fanatical desire to see it through. I’m normally a stubborn person, bit there is no part of me that has any sort of desire to lock myself away in a dark room for an entire day with the intent being the onset of insanity.
A few things that struck me oddly:
    1) As mentioned, the door doesn’t lock. You simply won’t allow yourself to open the door.
    2) The candle does inevitably burn out; things that melt when set on fire have a tendency to run out of fuel (I.e., wick.)
    3) No, the candle doesn’t reignite…but your vision adjusts accordingly. It may have been a trick of the mind and the exhaustion but the room I was in almost seemed to glow different colors…call me mad.
    4) I did have a sort of….epiphany. It was the most interesting sensation. Imagine life as a sort of…game. A board game. And to play it, you must be blindfolded. I think the intent of this ritual is to remove that blindfold for a moment or two; to understand the purpose of our existence. I had a moment where I, with absolute certainty, “This is what we are doing here.” I have since forgotten, as if some sort of…something put my blindfold back on
And no, I wasn’t on drugs or anything of the sort. I was simply curious.
Maybe my experience was unique, I’m not sure. But this isn’t dressed up. This is fact.

  5. First of all, I don’t have a room without windows , even my basement has a window. And second my doors don’t have any locks on them so part of this wouldn’t even work.

  6. I liked your story, but there’s a couple things to point out.
First, instead of randomly telling the ritual’s backstory in the middle of the first paragraph, I would recommend including it at the beginning, otherwise it interrupts your explanation of the ritual.
Second, you opened the story by saying the ritual makes you lose your grasp on reality and your sanity, which doesn’t really make a person want to perform it. If you include something that makes you want to do the ritual (like the part about gaining knowledge), it would grab the reader’s attention more effectively.
Third thing is that Islam and Muslim are the same religion (but I’m probably not the only one to point this out).
Otherwise, it was a really cool concept and I enjoyed reading it.

  7. i believe anything and everything in every one of these pastas should be taken as possiblity. this one made me feel although. i love this one, and the power of the gods IV ,i believe that if you were to keep a second a second, but decrease the time interval between the points. any time span is possible, any possibilites can be pressed to any infintesimal interval that creates any brand of idea of time…although when people try this im sure some have gone insane, im sure some have killed themselfs, just by reading and believing. when you know the possibilities of the mind, every thing is a danger like this because your brain adopts its rules, the placebo effect i guess affects life to a point where we cant even fathom, because its simply “revealing” the reality youv always existed in. revealing those deep dark intrepidies that plague the crevices of the universe, versus the once large knowledge humans used to possess… now turned to a small insignificant creature scared by things that take our physical bodies apart. the best thing about creepy pasta is the sheer fact that this website exists, sharing stories that affect us… and it can SCARE the shit out of you…i love creepy pasta, i love the holder series, and im a life time fan, whom wants to put his own sanity to the test of the clock…

  8. I really liked this. It didn’t creep me out much. Though, I understand the fear of time passing, the tick tick tick can make someone anxious or nervous. I know when I am at the doctors or the hospital waiting for a family member, friend or a report back on myself, the most unnerving sound is the tick tick tick.

The only factual error I see is that Islam and Muslim are the same religion, and their god’s name is Allah, not God. The only religion or faith I know of that simply calls god God is Christianity.

  9. very well written, and i’m not too quick to brush all this off really. The human mind can be a very strong yet very fragile thing. for going through this process, sleep deprivision defiantly won’t help you and delirium and paranoia could just set in from being in solitary for so long with the monotonous noise. the candle flickering and shadows certainly will cause some of that also.

  10. this is awesome. however, i would never try this, because sometimes i feel like i’m going crazy, this would make it worse. i dont want to risk going insane & killing people, either. anyone who reads the story & this comment, listen to what I’m about to say, & listen good. you think that you’re so strong-minded?? well, how about you prove that, then? there are very few people who can do this without going insane. that is all.

    1. So true. I think of my self as a very strong minded-person but get worried about all the little things. But i still think of myself as a strong-minded player. I’m wierd like that.

  11. Tried this in the room we were making for the addition on my house before we cut room for the windows. It was interesting and gave me a lot of time to think. Anyway, the candle never went out and none of this other junk happened. Other than dreaming, but it was just one of my normal dreams. I spent the time ripping off and burning articles of my clothing for amusement, sleeping, or thinking. I’ll tell you what happened when I emerged.
    1. Extremely hungry.
    2. Terrible vision due to the darkness and flickeringly candle light that took a few days to go back to normal.
    3. Seemingly enhanced hearing.
    4. A hatred for "tick-tock" clocks.

  12. This is actually pretty good. It didn’t scare me at all, but the thought of being locked in a room with your futur you, your other half, your bestfriend, and your parents telling you the "truth" is actually disturbing. Also having a dream about everything good in your life and another one about everything painful might be really exhausting. This is something that can be tried or an horror movie can be based on it. It will be awesome. And being alone with only a clock and a candle can actually make you lose your mind, especially for 24h because the only thing you can hear is tick, tock, tick, tock. 9/10

  13. @Cesca
Thats a great idea. Someone should. It would be interesting to see if it’s real or not. (Because I do happen to also be a stong beleiver in this too ^^)

    1. you had a weak mind at the time. control your thoughts & feelings, strengthen your mind, & give it another shot. just be glad you’re alive. not meant to be an insult.

  14. This wasn’t good, for many reasons. I can forgive bad writing style if the stories decent, but this was not. It didn’t scare me at all. Maybe it wasn’t in depth enough, but it just sounds so…dumb. The sentence structure was garbage and there were errors everywhere.

  15. @Shogunfish It does not have to physically happen like the story claims. You could simply believe the door is locked, or your wounds are healed when they arn’t. 24 hours of “tick… tock… tick… tock…” could drive one insane and cause these hallucinations.

  16. I loved this pasta. I’ve been reading all day but this is the first one to actually give me chills. And whats more, it made me think about things (life, the future, religion, etc). I would totally do this if it were real. Bravo, 10/10

  17. I am disappointed.

At the start of the pasta I thought it was going to be a mental thing, which would have been cool.

You listen to the clock for 24 hours in a dark room and you have a series of different hallucinations until you either go insane or discover some deeper meaning in life.

But the fact that somehow listening to a clock can cause external things like locking doors and healing wounds makes it dumb. Not to mention that I really don’t see what you gain by doing this.

    1. maybe you don’t actually hurt yourself, but you feel it like it was real.
People should start being active readers instead of amateur critics.

    1. You find the candle going out and then coming back with different colors to be the oddest part about all of this? xD

The entire process makes no sense.

OT: Interesting to read. I was expecting better though. I’ll give it a 6/10 just because it had some neat potential and made me want to try it out!

    1. Maybe the procedure simply revolves around human perception of the universe, and since the person doing the ritual perceives time in a matter of minutes, seconds and hours, it will unfold in that manner.

  18. contacting god takes more than 24 hours. every second of life is the same second ; that is to say the instant he appears to u is the same instant that he is gone. the same truth is true of every living thing. time is an illusion. a lie

    1. this is only a theory that people believed (i guess). it could be a 24 hour way to contact god or it could just be something that’s in your head. either way, it’s very interesting.

    2. Time is not an illusion, time is a perception. Without life in the universe every second would be the same as the next, as there would be no tangible proof to measure time without life force in the universe. However, since there is life in this universe, that is to say there is evolution in this universe, time is perceived by any and all life forms as a measurement of evolution (whether the evolution is mental or physical). So, one being may “feel” that time is moving quickly or that time is moving slowly based on the evolution taking place within that individual’s perceived universe, or in other words based on how much evolution in the universe that individual is aware of.

Evolution= “the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form”
Life= “the capacity for growth… and continual change preceding death”
Time is based on evolution, evolution literally IS life, and therefore to say that time is an illusion would also be to say that life is an illusion. From where you are sitting, mister “the cake” your life is a perception, and therefore so is time. The same holds true for everyone else, respectively.

      1. Not sure I understand the whole “time is evolution” but my understanding is that time is relative. Astronauts in the International Space actually age slower than those on earth; not enough that we would notice, though. I believe it has to do with the gravity in the universe. They say if you were to approach a black hole, time would stand still. Those of us on earth would continue to age as we do, but the person near a black hole would remain the same age. It’s such an amazing and beautifully creepy theory.

    1. there is actually a thing on youtube thats just a clock sound for 12 hours. me and a few friends are planning to do a psychological study with this
