January Discussion Post: Why Do You Read And/Or Write Scary Stories?

Estimated reading time — < 1 minute

This month’s topic was suggested by Dave Taylor, and big thanks to him because I was having trouble coming up with a topic!

It’s pretty self-explanatory. If you’re a reader only, why do you feel so drawn to reading scary and creepy stories? If you’re a writer, do you have a reason for your desire to create horror fiction? If you’re both, well, you get to answer both questions!

Last month I asked how you discovered Creepypasta, and I guess that this question is sort of the inevitable continuation – why did you stick around? What about creepypastas compels you to want to continue reading and/or writing them?

  1. I’ve learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path. Transforming fear into freedom – how great is that?

  2. I read these cause I’m trying to find something truly disturbing. I love these short stories and ideas, they’re much better than movies (especially true today) and it shows you don’t have to rich to create something unique to share.

  3. I usually only help out with discussions and write. I wrote Plague.exe, my first pasta, and it hasn’t been reviewed quite yet. I am going to be a regular writer on this site. I want to write purely for the reader’s enjoyment. I don’t really care if people copy me as long as they mention me as the author.
I wrote my story on notebook paper since submissions are closed, and I scared myself with my own story XD I love writing and contributing to this site, and whatever stories are sent to crappypasta contribute to them.

  4. Pretty fly foe a scifi

Because horrors don’t scare me, when I read a Creepypasta and it’s describing something scary I imagine the most horrifying thing I can think up and because I know what scares me my mental image of the people/things written are worse than any Grudge or Boogy man.

  5. my reason is pretty weird but well…. I’ve had MAJOR mental health problems ever since I was little. anxiety, paranoia, obsessive tendencies, etc. for as long as I can remember I’ve always been scared of well… EVERYTHING.

everything but scary stories, that is. I really don’t know why it’s an exception; maybe it’s because I’m so afraid of real life that fictional things don’t bother me? but anyway. ever since I was like 8 I’ve surrounded myself with creepy things and scary movies and stories because well…. Everyone else was afraid and for ONCE, I wasn’t. they were the scared ones.

    I guess it’s just a refreshing change.

  6. I read the scary stories to be afraid. The reason I write them is to get into people’s minds and see what they fear and bring their fear to them.

  7. I am only a 12-year old and have been drawn to this stuff like a fly to honey. I believe the reason why is because I enjoy the complications of the unknown and even know a little bit. The minute I read it, it felt like there was some small element of the story that intrigued me to read more. Kind of like that mini voice in your head that tell you what you should do, only it wasn’t mine, it was the story.

  8. I like reading/watching scary things because I read somewhere that being scared burns calories :)
I like writing scary things because it’s the only way I can explain the things going on in my mind. Countless friends, family members, and therapists have tried to get me to explain my mental state. But it is impossible to do so. So instead, I write them.

  9. I’ve always enjoyed being scared, but I realized at a young age that I don’t scare easily, so it’s been hard to find a good fix on scary storytelling because most movies/books that actually do scare me are also extremely violent, and that’s just not my thing. Creepypasta is the happy medium for me between scary and horror, and I get the same enjoyment out of being creeped out as I do being scared or shocked.

I also find the creepypasta genre to be home to some of the most interesting and original concepts from some of the most interesting and original people. I love to see all the ideas that come from normal guys and gals whose sole purpose is to bring their ideas to life and entertain their readers. I love that if a creepypasta is good enough, others will adopt the idea into their stories until you have spin-offs and folklore and entire forums dedicated to them, and that’s just awesome.

  10. I don’t get scared easily about stories because I have been through one of my own surviving a deadly disease but I LOVE to do my best to inflict fear in others using nothing but the power of the written word, and to see if anyone would ever be able to inflict fear in me again. And yes a couple have… like smile dog. *Shivers*

  11. Aidan Buchanan

I read them because I was recently intoduced to the horror genre and turns out I love getting scared. I write them because I have a lot of weird ideas and well… I have nightmares every night, lot’s of my creepy pastas are based around these nightmares of mine. I also souffer from hypnopomic hallucinations (look it up) which is what some of my stories are based around. I recently published my first creepy pasta and am waiting to see if it is published or not.

  12. Thoughtful Anon

I think that what makes a story creepy is not simply a ghost story. Short scares, small jumps, they don’t do anything.

So, what is creepy? The hollow feeling that you get when your soul rearranges itself and your mind has to wrap around a new concept that changes everything.

Yes, dark epiphanies, that do not give you nightmares for only a night, but those strange discoveries that linger in you, small and subtle realizations that you wonder about when your mind is empty.

Something is truly creepy when you know that you can never comprehend it.

So, I read creepy stories as well as write them to better understand the world and truths about human nature and psyche.

  13. Ok the weird thing is I don’t care for horror genre that much. I like odd stuff sometimes, but just being scared alone isn’t fun for me. The reason I ever write creepy stuff is because this seems to be one of the only sites that has an active writing community of people that know what they’re doing. And also, I like to challenge myself to altering people’s emotion through words. It’s my passion for writing.

  14. Because, to me, there is nothing like knowing that somebody, somewhere, is reading something that I’ve created. I’ve always loved reading, and becoming an author always seemed like the most wonderful career.

  15. I love to read horror, watch horror, and write horror. Takes a lot to scare me.

Can’t wait to submit some creepypasta! I’ve written three stories so far!

One is a government conspiracy, the other a (true) haunted video, and the last an apocalyptic horror. Check me out on FictionPress! ~ Astroblitz x

I read not for the thrill, but for the satisfaction based on the riots of a person’s by what they feel and think. My first pasta was slenderman I think. Creepypastas don’t scare me but I read them to addict my mind to read more thus a big fan here!

  17. Because an online friend decided “Hey, I’m up at 2am and scared witless, I will now pass down this awful experience onto you at 2am,” and linked me here. Which, of course, freaked me out and then I passed it down onto others; so on and so forth. I guess the best way to describe it would be getting on a rollercoaster and climbing that steep hill right before the big dive. It’s a terrifying but exhilarating experience. Who doesn’t love to be scared?

  18. I read horror stories because I want to be frightened. I want to see if I CAN be frightened – most of these stories don’t seem to scare me, and I desperately want something to be able to. I can’t quite say why I want that feeling – perhaps it’s the fact that I’m a masochist.

I also feel rather sad when things don’t frighten me; I feel as if there’s a whole world out there that I cannot enjoy because of my lack of emotional response. I would love to watch horror movies, but it’s hard to find any that are scary to me. I just end up being disappointed.

Maybe it’s the desire to feel anything at all. I went through a long period during which I felt so little, but I can’t say whether fear is a good substitute for nothing.

I agree with SilentWolfSpirit – I desire the feeling of true fear; I feel a deep desire in me to be terrified, though I wish I could put into words why I felt so! I would dearly love to write horror stories, but that is my main weakness – I cannot easily express what I think with words. It is a terrible thing, burdened as I am with a profound love for our mixed-up language, not to be able to express myself. I do better with poetry, though I am sure many of you would have something to say about that!

  19. Everyone likes being scared…there is something so childlike and innocent about the thrill we get from the unknown…I’m a grown up and grown up life sucks lol so I like to read creepypastas to take me back to my childhood every now and then..the childhood where a dark room is scary and there just might be a monster under your bed:)

  20. The reason i read creepypasta cause i love scary stories and finding good stories is tough so i read these stories ans the reason i write them is because i live to see people terrified!

  21. I write because writing is an act of creating, and creating gives a sense of power. In addition, writing gives you a subtle influence upon your reader. If you’re an exceptional writer, you can change someone’s mood, thoughts, and outlook, however temporary.

Bringing fear to people is fun, which is why I write creepypasta. Horror is a good genre to write in if you want to really change people. Everyone knows about the effectiveness of fear mongering, so it’s like that in a way.

  22. namelessfaceless

come to think of it, i kinda wish i still had all those construction-paper books.
i’d like to see what i could make now, out of the imaginative ideas i’d had as a child;)

    1. Oh, Jeez, that’s the same thing I did when I was young, though my stories were about ghosts and ghouls, not really about Slendy and others like him

  23. namelessfaceless

been reading horror to scare the socks off myself since i was a little girl.
i picked up my first book when i was about 4 years old, and as soon as i learned to write, i used to staple construction paper together to fashion and write my own little books.
was always always drawn to the horror side of things:)
i loved when i’d read something deliciously scary, and i’d sleep with the lights on.
i always made up stories and little urban legends to scare the other kids in my class.

there’s just nothing that beats that spine-tingling, hair raising feelin’.

  24. The thrill and mystery. The best pastas are subtle and eerie. Lavender Town Syndrome was my first ever, and after reading many, some entertained me, some made me think, some were pure awesome, some were terrifying, but nothing scared me like Candle Cove. The mystery and thrill was awesome. I love Creepypasta

  25. I read them because I find it fun to unsettle my self and be afraid to turn around. I am also a big woos so i read them in the day to help become more “brave” I guess you can call it. My last reason is I print out the short ones and read them to friends at school, they hate it. (trolololololol)

  26. I read these stories because I think they’re very interesting. I don’t really like to be scared (I don’t watch scary movies at all) but I love the monsters or whatever. I love all the sudden plot twists and the endings that leave you creeped out and make you think. I don’t write my own yet but I’m thinking about doing it because I’m normally a pretty good writer and I think I would be good at stories like these

  27. i only very recently stumbled upon this site.
come to think of it, i dont even remember exactly how..
just more of my latenight internet puttering.
    since then im addicted.
starting when i was a little girl, ever since i can remember, ive loved sitting in bed at night with a flashlight and reading things to scare the hell out of myself.
i also have always dabbled in writing, mostly just for fun but have also taken a fair amount of courses, (though not enough that i’d be confident in submitting any of my own short stories yet, lol)
and i just really really really have enjoyed reading what you all have written.
some of it is… a little less than scary, but then some of it has kept me awake at night, lol.

thanks so much for this site,
and every one of the stories which keep me sleeping with a nightlight:)

    xo

  28. I write simply because I love to write; but I tend to write horror because I enjoy coming up with ideas for monsters, creatures, killers etc. I’d much rather write an interesting/scary/creepy/sad story than I would anything else. Seeing comments from people about being scared or creeped out makes it all worthwhile, but I have to say, even if nobody seen my stories, I would still write for myself.

  29. I’m just a reader. I like scary stories that leave me with a feeling that there’s something malicious out there, even if my mind says otherwise. Not a lot of stories do that, but it’s still fun to read them, and they’re free. My favorite is probably the first I read, which was The Rake.

I’d like to submit something one day – but only after I’ve written something feels truly polished, excellent, and of course, creepy.

    1. exactly the same for me:)
i love that feeling that there’s something awful out there, outside my window or in the mirror, etc…
even though i know better, lol

  30. I really don’t know, but I’m sort of obsessed with creepypastas, I really love seeing blood, killers, freaky things, and to be honest I think many of the creepypasta characters are hot.. o_o <3 and I'm just a reader.

I love this website, keep up the great work! ^^

and finally, thank you so much for bringing up things to fill my time and some of my interests, I used to have some sort of lacking on that side.

    Love, Noora. c:

  31. I am a reader of creepypasta, i think i read them because everyone likes getting the poo scared out of them every now and then, but after a while it has actually helped me deal with my fears. For instance im not afraid of the dark anymore. i also think it is the all around aspect of how i love to read anyways, i usually only read scary stories in the dark and it just gives it more of a thrill

  32. I started reading creepypasta and will continue, mostly because its right up my ally! I love spooky, creepy, scary, etc.. Kinda stuff! When I was little I would always lookup stories then research about the myth and tell my own scary stories bout them, but I haven’t written any; I’m just not the best writer out there. Lol. Creepy pastas keeps me interested and makes me keep coming back to see what’s new and more scary!

  33. Actually, I just want to point out what a jackass you were being when you posted the admin update 1/5. It strikes me as beyond extreme that you would immediately delete submissions from an author just because they asked about the status of their submissions. As a fan of creepypasta, but someone who has never posted to the site (but who means to and has a few ideas floating around), I find this method very off-putting and even offensive. people may get irritating sometimes, but there is absolutely no reason to treat everyone with such reckless abandon.

    1. I can’t tell if you’re trolling or if you just haven’t bothered to actually read what I’ve been writing and truly consider why that rule was made.

It was made because it was necessary. As has been stated before, this is a one-person operation. ONE person reads all the submissions (usually around 100ish a day, though there have been days with as many as 300), reads and replies to all contact us emails, reads every single comment (manual moderation is necessary because so many people are tempted to use the comment sections for completely inappropriate things like posting threats and personal information of authors simply because they dislike the pasta they wrote, for one example) and replies to any questions that come up. This same person also deals with scheduling posts on the main site and on Crappypasta, deals with all the constant software and plugin updates that go on (and frequently break things) to keep the site in working order, and also has to monitor the constant attempts we get at hacking. I don’t exaggerate when I say that we get multiple hack attempts every single day. I also deal with all the types like you who feel that I am their own personal punching bag: I get some very nasty comments and emails almost every single day, whether it’s because I rejected their pasta, because I don’t like Jeff the Killer, or simply because I stood up for myself and actually reacted to the myriads of people who feel it’s okay to treat me as if I am not an actual person.

So, with all that laid out, perhaps you understand that in order to keep the workload from getting completely out of hand, submission rules are necessary. It only escalated to this point – such harsh rules – because so many people were completely ignoring all of my rules and demanding that I treat them each as a special case, even though I’ve literally posted announcements begging for them to remember that I’m an actual person and to please respect my guidelines.

You know how children can’t be trusted not to break things or stick their fingers into electrical sockets if left to their own devices? Consider this rule my last resort, my child-proofing attempt. Harsh rules go into effect because the community made it clear that they were incapable of following rules without this sort of immediate consequence. I didn’t want to have to bring it to this level, and I’ve been resisting it for months, but it got to a point where it was literally this or closing up shop. If you still cannot understand or empathize with why I had to do this and still feel it makes me a “jackass” to try and make running this site manageable rather than just shutting it down, I don’t think that I can change your mind.

Suffice to say, if you are NOT one of the people who reads the FAQ, submission form, announcements, etc and still goes “well, but that doesn’t apply to ME”, then this rule will never be anything that you should even concern yourself with. It should be off-putting only if you were planning to break rules.

      1. Now, I feellikea jackass. I guess it didn’t occur to me that juston personra thisite. I guess I justassume there were multiple admins. It’s nottha I was worried aboutbreaking therule myself, buti justcam acrossa discussing nonetheless. That being said,I want to apologize forspeaking so harshly. In all honesty I visit your siteever dayan almost alwaysfin something worth reading. Thethough of juston personrunnin thiswebsiti astonishing, and it looks very professional.it must take youa tremendousamoun of time to keep creepypasta so tasty and piping hot. I could notd thismyself. Perhaps consider putting someone in your employ? Or maybea friend. Anyway all apologies if my writing is jumbled,a I’m writing thisrathe precariously on my phone. Again I apologize and wish I could retract my previous statement, butwhat’done is done. Hopefullym reaction to all thiswil remind youtha your time is worthwhile, and I’m certainly notth only one who thinkso.

        1. Thank you, your reply is very much appreciated. Most people don’t apologize to me in the comments if they say something rude, you might be the first, actually…

And I understand about the typing. I’m having my own issues with it today because I’m all hazy on the combination of antibiotics/empty stomach (I can only drink water for the day), the short announcement I just made took me a solid 20 minutes just because I seriously cannot type like a functional person today and had to fix almost every other word =P

But thank you, it really means a lot.

  34. I enjoy reading the submissions on this website for the thrill of the horror. I love reading a post that, with the last few lines of the story, can send chills up my spine and make me look over my shoulder after reading it. I was recently directed to this site by a friend, and I was instantly hooked by what the site has to offer. I hope to start submitting my own pastas in the near future.

  35. I’ve always liked scary/creepy things. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been drawn to anything ‘odd’ or paranormal. Most of it, I just enjoy. I love seeing the process in which people create these ‘monsters’ and how they execute bringing about the fear. Much to my disappointment, most things that are labeled scary, really aren’t and that bothers me. Scary movies have a tendency to have a really solid, great idea, then completely ruin the whole thing with bad acting, bad special effects, and over-kill. So I like creepypasta because there are so many great ideas here and I get to visualize and sit in the dark with my laptop and these things actually become real in a way. I mean, I obviously don’t believe everything I read, but there’s nothing better than using your imagination to freak yourself out, haha.

  36. I’m looking for more stories, describing pain, arony and fear in people. You need more of those. There are so many boring pastas, too many.I don’t believe that there weren’t many better ones sent, but I guess instead of posting them the admin decided they aren’t and posted the shittier ones, like any other admin does.

    1. You caught us. There’s a vast conspiracy where the admin of every single website is working together to make the internet suck.

Move over Cumberbatch, there’s a new Sherlock in town.

      ???????????????

  37. I’ve always loved horror. There’s a video of me as a five year old telling my grampa a story that ends “and her HEAD FELL OFF!”. The story was The Green Ribbon, one of those stories that gets passed around camp fires like creepy pasta does online. I started looking for creepy posts on Funnyjunk or 4Chan, before searching it directly and ending up here
I guess I love the impossible, intense worlds of scifi, fantasy, and horror. After reading Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, or Charlotte Perkins Gilman, you just keep chasing that thrill. As for creepypasta.com specifically – well, the variety, the comments, the amateur community… I could go on.

  38. I love creepy things and scary things in general. It’s just personal taste, I suppose. I read these things just for fun.

  39. I like it becausE of the thrill I don’t get much of that where I live the closest I get to thrill is my nana telling at me

  40. Im something you would probably call a creepoholic. Im addicted to creepyness even if i dont want to be. People even say im creepy. I dont know what it is but something about getting your heart to beat fast is pretty awesome. I write beacuse 1. i want to share personal stories. 2. I want to share my opinions on the other side. or 3. i would love to send chills down peoples spines. ^0^ I beleive there are actual demons that try to make you break and these stories sometimes remind me the human will and God are stronger than the demons.

  41. It is the best distraction ever, I have a pretty tough daily life, and I have tried reading other genres, which don’t distract me at all, I just can’tfocus, but creepy stories scare me and substitute all my other feelings for fear, perfectl making me forget my miserable life as I read about peoplewho are in way. More fearful situations.

  42. I’ve been drawn to anything that strays from the norm or what society considers it as such. Horror is just what I’m attracted to in the sense that it catches my attention over other genres simply because it’s the only thing that I can latch onto for reading material. Even the most simplistic scary/creepy story, if done right, can give you thrills that no other genre will. Fear is addicting, and to me, it’s one the most interesting feelings you’ll ever have. Creepypasta is full of talented writers. I am elated whenever a new audio is put up on youtube. I love reading the stories on here and will continue to be a fan of creepypasta for years to come.

  43. I love scary stories, but I end up scares and I get paranoid. But the reason why is, if its like murder stuff and its grusom ( sorry don’t know how to spell it) it makes me feel relaxed kind of, DON’T WORRY IM NOT A MURDERER!!!!!! Anyway that it and um………….

Hallelujah! Praise The Lord :D happy scares

  44. I guess I read them to get to that point when my heart is pounding, my ears are ringing, and a rush of adrenaline is running through my veins. That single short moment when I’m paralyzed in my seat, body trembling and little drops of sweat slide down my face, too scared to even turn to look around me. I love it.

  45. Well, after falling in love with the thrills and chills these stories gave me, I wanted to write my own. And I am proud of it. May write another soon.

  46. I write about things that people may think are real, and I try to come up with theories as to why the world operates the way it does.
Mine pivot more on situations and events rather than blood and gore. In fact, out of about 7 stories I have written, only one of them has a mention of gore, and only briefly.

  47. The Creepypasta stories gives me a special feeling. I love how original can the writers be and how awesome is that feeling of being scared even if you know that is only a story.

  48. i read and attempt to write because i am strangely drawn to anything remotely creepy/scary. when nothing suits my need, i try to make something that does

  49. I stuck around simply because I like a good scare. While most people will run away from the things tht scare them I think the best thing to do is just face them head on and ,yeah, you will get scared but you’ll get over it. Why I write? I’ve only written one story which I’ve patiently sent to the admin which made me smirk when I read the January post because I feel good that I haven’t been badgering adman over there(three fingers to the lips to you for taking this job up btw) I write because I am an entertainer I enjoy entertaining people whether that be by singing or acting or writing

  50. After discovering creepypasta, I continued to read stories here because the different stories were just so interesting o.o, and I love reading so why not :P.

  51. I read creepy pasta because paranoia is a powerful feeling. It’s not a pleasant one, but it can bridge the gap between fiction and reality in ways other feelings can’t. If I read a story and it creeps me out, in my head, that story has become real – I might stay up all night worrying that maybe that terrible thing really DID happen, maybe I AM next, maybe it’s all true. In that sense, creepiness can bring a story to life.

  52. I just submitted my first creepypasta, and I want to submit another on if the platform lets me. But let me answer the question.

I want to keep writing because I am fond to the supernatural. I’ve had my own personal expriences with it, and I want to use them as my inspiration to keep doing this. I am still new, but I hope to improve.

Ps:. My “e” on the keyboard works horribly. sorry for the mistypes.

  53. It’s the pure thrill of it. We as humans long to be something greater than ourselves. Powerful things compels us to stay. Our curiosity is unquenchable and mystery intrigues us. That is why we stay.

  54. I read scary stories because its like going into another world. A world that could never exist, a world to escape reality

  55. We enjoy reading these stories because it helps us bond as brothers, since we share an interest for the unknown and the unexpected.

  56. Horror to me is such a degrading genre. Desensitization and the development of such clichés that maim the medium has become more and more prevalent in recent times. What pits horror in an even worse position is the fact that it sets out to create a sense of unease and dread in the audience, however that has become more and more difficult due to our increasing callousness towards displeasure in a haunting sense.

I am loyal to this site not because it sets out to terrify its audience (though that is a wonderful side-effect when experienced) but it’s a sense of community and a collective mindset, still loyal to its sinking genre. Reading these stories doesn’t overtly frighten me too often (though it’s wonderfully appreciated) but gives me hope the horror genre still has life in it yet. Also the ingenuity of such talented writers gives me initiative to develop my own admittedly-poor writing skills.

    1. I have to say, I kind of chuckled a bit at your comment. “Well, the genre is pretty much shite, but GO TEAM!” Horror is probably the oldest genre, back to the days when Neanderthals would tell their little cave babies about how they’d be eaten by Aurochs if they were bad. Horror will weather hollywood’s shitty remakes and undead romances on sites like this, fed by those with a true love and fear of the unknown – people like us. Glad to have you here, Len Lye!

  57. The reason I read Creepy Pasta or horror stories in general is because I enjoy the thrill of it. Perhaps it’s because I know that even though I’m scared I’m pretty sure I’ll be safe.

Sometimes it’s just because the author is talented at writing these stories and I can’t help reading. I also enjoy retelling the stories to people in person and watch them get creeped out.

  58. I guess the reason that I enjoy reading creepy stories is because I’ve always had an interest in the unexplainable and thats exactly what most Creepy Pastas are.

  59. Well, I came here to read the story of Jeff the Killer but I was extremely scared. Once I read his story, I became “immune” to the fear and was instantly drawn to scary stories.
It is something I come to often because it is interesting and there is always something new to read.

  60. reading stories like these keeps reminding me that im not alone for experiencing such and that sharing those ghost experiences would somehow (i think) could help others too on how they would deal with it

  61. I really like to freak myself out. I often try to read at least one pasta on my phone before I go to sleep. Some of the stories are so good, i often find myself still thinking about them the next day. :)

  62. I’ve never read many scary stories in my life, until now. I’m a reader of kinda different tastes but now that I’m at university I don’t have as much time to read as I had in the past few years… I realise I spend more time on the computer and on the web doing nothing, time that I could occupy reading the books I have, but after a day of lessons (or even in the weekend), I really don’t feel like putting my head on a book again for a while.

The short stories here give me something nice to read before going to sleep, something quick and relaxing, and also a training for my english.
Kinda funny that I prefer reading scary stories than watching scary films!

  63. Creepypasta Mistress

just the feeling of being scared. its addicting and it makes you smile.
of course we all have our breaking points. sometimes we get to scared. but its fun.

  64. Well reading Horror for the better part of my life now (about 22 years out of 31 god I am feeling old) I just love the genre and well I do believe, that Horror is best expressed in short stories or microfiction or in really long books, so well its just the perfect place for me here, although I do enjoy crappy pasta as well, always good for a laugh

  65. I’ve been scaring myself with my own imagination for as long as I can remember. I had terrible nightmares as a kid, usually all along the same lines. When I reached the fourth grade, we started having ‘Creative Writing’ in school. Most normal kids wrote about normal things: I mostly wrote about my nightmares.

And when the teachers would read them, I could tell that a little of what I was feeling had been passed along to them. That made the nightmares seem much less scary, to me.

And when I got older and a little better at writing, I enjoyed it even more. These days, I would write even if no one but me ever read or enjoyed it – it’s just something I have to do, to feel fulfilled.

  66. I actually don’t know why…even though the stories scared me but I keep returning here, reading and thinking about their existence..Other than that it’s because of the addiction.

  67. I read creepypasta/scary stories because I like the feeling of dread it gives me. Its like the feeling that I am in danger but still stay safe. It’s paradox. And when I find a gem of a story, I feel like I am looking at an artwork, an awesome artwork.

As for writing scary stories, I love it because I am amused by the realization that I can scare myself. It is the feeling of telling a dreary tale as fast as you can, like an adrenaline rush.

Fast, because sometimes my sanity is on the line. Sometimes I even have to stop for awhile just to say to myself, “It’s just a story.”

  68. I read them because some of them are actually quite good, and it gives me an opportunity to be a little bit sadist to those that are shite.

I write them because it is a good prompt and a nice way to get stories out there.

  69. i read them out of boredom. I’m also hoping that one will possibly change my perspective on life. a few have, minorly
one example being, i can no longer take a shower without imagining some invisible monster is watching with his hands down his pants. not exactly how i wanted my daily life to be effected, but whatever

  70. I have been very attracted to anything horror related my whole life as far back as i can remember. My fascination started out with vampires as a small child and then progressed on to more frightening creatures that I was only able to find in books and short stories. I have an extremely vulgar, greusome, and twisted imagination and i find it much more satifying to create my own design of these creatures to fill my self with a much more exciting fear while reading a scary story. Ive often thought about writting my own short stories but unfortunately i have found that i am unable to put these unsettling thoughts in my own mind onto paper. So, naturally i am always on the lookout for a new unsettling story so my imagination can run wild within the descriptions given by the writer. ive only just recently discovered this web site and god im glad i did! So far ive been very impressed with most of the stories ive read and am very much looking forward to future entries. Love you guys, keep up the great work!

  71. My reason for reading these? It works my mind, in ways I can’t describe at times. Often frightening me, making me feel melancholy, or even make me get chills when I’m walking around at night. Some of the stories on this site, the sheer possibility is what get my mind working. All of the possibilities, and everything involving the stories makes me want to hear more. I’ve got to say, the fact that they are all tall tales is kinda frightening to say the least. Also, to put in my two-cents, these stories are much scarier than any “scary” movie I’ve ever watched. Yet, I hope that people continue on with making these wonderfully scary stories. ^^

  72. I love reading pastas because it gives me an idea to what the unknown side is as well as on how it affects me. I have always had a strong curiosity for the unknown and love reading scary stories more than just watching them, not to mention how such an experience can unlock your mind to awareness on what is currently on the room with you.

  73. HEY, I KNOW HIM! (Dave Taylor. Amazing writer he is)

Anyway… the short answer to this question is: i love getting mindfucked.

Whenever i’m watching movies or reading books or whatever i have a tendency to guess what’s going to happen next. 9 times out of 10, i’m right. With creepypastas and horror in general (unless it is a cheesy, popular horror flick) i am unable to do so. In fact, i don’t even attempt to guess. I get so caught up in the moment with these stories.

I don’t write as of right now, but maybe someday. I used to a lot when i was younger, so maybe i’ll take it up again when i get older. I have some creepy ideas though… muahahha! :D

    1. i can totally agree with the mindfuck thing. Some of the creepypastas are predictable, but when you get lost in a really good one there is nothing better.

  74. I guess I like reading creepypastas because………well, I don’t actually know. I guess I just like scary stories and paranormal stuff, and I think I might try writing my own creepypasta one day. It will probably suck though. :P

  75. SilentWolfSpirit

I believe that I read creepypastas because well I’m one of those people that don’t get scared that easily. I like to see just what people come up with and I just love the feeling of fear. I have tried everything but I haven’t yet witnessed true fear. Haven’t you heard the saying ‘Curiosity killed the cat’? And I just love reading. Sense I’m at home all day there is nothing to do… T_T

  76. the grim sleeper

i read and write them cuz i belive i CANT get scared but love to see if mabey one day, juuust mabey something could possibly scare me. BTW my most recent story is ”my fathers gohst” plz read and rate ^_^

  77. I read them for that strange thrill that good creepypastas can give me. Always liked the horror genre and reading, so this is the perfect combination for me. It’s also interesting to see what people’s imaginations can create, as I know that mine can come up with pretty scary stuff sometimes.

  78. I read scary stories because… hmm… well, I used to never be able to read them. But, for the past year or so, I have had severe nightmare problems, so reading scary stories just makes them more interesting (what’s the point of a bland nightmare? there isn’t one).

Now, as a writer of scary stories, I see it mostly as an emotional outlet. There are many ways one can expel their emotions: singing, dancing, reading, etcetra. I expel them by writing horror stories and drawing strange pictures. Yes, I know that sounds concerning. But oh well, horror stories entertain YOU if you’re here.

  79. Well, creepypastas evoke some sort of curiosity in me. But I’ve been writing horror for about quite a while. The reason I write horror however, is because it’s a topic that most people dread. It’s a sense of fear, your paranoia unleashed. That thing – That monster hiding in your closet while your heartbeat is pulsating more than before, waiting for the conclusion of the story while feverishly tapping your foot against the floor. It’s a sense of facing your own fears, and ultimately understanding it.

  80. I continue to read pastas every chance I get, because they’re interesting and seem to ring with truth. Why are humans so afraid of the night, shadows, and anything unknown? All the pastas hear tell why, and I became addicted to reading about what may be the cause of our fear.

  81. 1st thing creepypasta is awesome n HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.I think mines 1st was Candlecove or Russian sleep experiment. From that day onwards i am reading it everynight in bed n it give such a chill feel. Also creepypastas are very much addictive n i mean it.At last, the stories abt madness which shows inhuman nature is like getting into my inner part of me.

  82. I think I like to, because, well, come on. I’m that kind of person that enjoys getting scared. I like watching horror films, reading scary stories, etc. I think it all started at a birthday sleepover of a friend’s…Her parents were gonna be out all night, so we decided to watch a horror movie, even though we weren’t allowed. (I was 11 at the time.) The birthday girl, Mackenzie, picked out a classic. Silence of The Lambs. None of us could go to sleep that night. I loved it. How my imagination could bring out the darkest things in my mind. I know, weird, right? Lol, but I just like the thrill of being scared a little, my heart racing.

  83. YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE USERNAME!

Because reading pastas is fun as hell, and knowing that someone, somewhere likes YOUR pasta, is really appealing.

      1. YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE USERNAME!

Sorry for the late reply! Totally brah. Who’d be stupid enough to abondon a prompt from you? But I’m thinking of not giving a exact location until I find somewhere creepy enough. Its still getting worked on though.

  84. Well I think I posted on the last discussion post that my first pasta was ‘The Russian Sleep Experiment’. So in a way what compels me to read more horror fiction is the promise of physical terror, because I think its the most frightening/interesting kind of fear.

Also I often see what random pasta names jump out to me as beacons of my story preference, and that can drag me addictively into new kinds of story, which in turn makes me read more, so the possibilities with horror are simply endless, to reader or author.

  85. The reason that I read Creepypasta stories is that I absolutely love them. They draw you in and most have very good detail and also some use imagery and take that to the next level to make you feel creeped out. They’re amazing and I actually want to star writing scary stories one day. I doubt that the story would be as good as some of the ones on here. But anyways I really love Creepypasta and hope that the stories get even more creepy :D.

  86. I read creepypastas because it’s sort of an escape from the real world. You can go off into an imaginary place full of the unknown, and most people are too afraid to do that for themselves. I think the community on creepypasta is much more than a bunch of writers and random passers by who read the stories, we help each other escape the mundane everyday grind.

    1. True…but the people who write them are always like “True story!” and the ones with creepy paranormal beings (that kill you). Can’t they write not scary creepy pastas? And it always results in death of someone.

  87. I enjoy feedback, honestly. That’s how it started….then I just kinda started writing based on things that had actually happened to me so it became more and more enjoyable.

  88. I like reading scary stories for the thrill and the chills I get as I read something scary or mysterious. I write scary stories because it helps me create a new reality, as frightening as it is but still sometimes more comfortable than our own. Sometimes.

  89. I write about what scares me; the dark, howling, brain parasites, strangers, death and loneliness. I do it because I understand a little bit of neurology, and what I know is that fear is the single greatest contributor to what we call the human condition. It is the root of all emotion, choice, evil, and progress.

I write to help understand something that I can’t define. Something elusive and primal that I can’t live without, something that reminds me of the will to survive in a cold and uncaring universe. Even if those things frighten me to consider.

I call it the Dirty Paper Machine.

  90. You should also make a Discussion post about How do you read Pasta’s im sure alot of people do different things

  91. Hi I love scary stories because it’s very hard to scare me. I could read a real book of the dead in a grave and not be scared. Too many things have happened I’ve seen ghosts lots of times. I saw a woman in a hospital gown in the northridge hospital in the mirror in the bathroom. When I was a kid my bed would shake and I could feel steps on my bed until something would rest on my chest. I could feel it watching me but it thankfully never did anything. It would just eventually walk back off the bed and I would hear steps down the hall. I would hear my name being called to the bathroom at night when I was young but I was never stupid enough go see what they wanted. Even now if I walk alone at night I can hear my name called sometimes and I get a terrible chill. I once made fun a girl from south America who said her family moved her because there was a vampire was spirit chasing her this was way before twlight and Harry potter probably just came out. Let’s just say I regretted making fun of her that night. I have had balls roll by themselves around me. Just too much to write so I’m so numb to any story or movie but it’s still fun to get some stories that I can relate to that have actually happened to me like the bedtime series. I would love to hear anyone else who had ghosts mess with them. I would say I didn’t know why but I used to mock the spirits and welcomed it I still do and things would eventually happen. My best friend used to openly mock demons and ghosts until he had a visitor one night… Now he tries to go to church more often lol. If you really want to see a ghost and don’t care about the consequences against you or loved ones just start talking shit for awhile about Satan and god and ghosts and stuff will slowly start happening but don’t do it if you can’t take it.

  92. I became attracted to the horror genre through watching Pan’s Labyrinth. I then realised, hating anything scary before, how beautiful and fascinating it can really be. From there, I discovered silent hill.

I can’t give a clear answer as to why I enjoy scary/creepy stories and horror, but I guess I enjoy feeling unsettled or creeped out. The atmosphere scary stories give really intrigues me.

  93. I love being creeped out:D There’s just something about it.. I just started reading these stories recently, but I’m hooked for sure. Sometimes I go to the really bad pastas just to read the hilarious comments.. but mostly I love the originality of some of the stories I’ve read. I get jealous, because I could never write like these guys..

  94. Considering i have like. A disorder where I’m addicted to hurting others and are… I am a schizophrenic also. So scary is just life for me lol………………

  95. I read creepy pasta ( or other creepy stuff) when I’m bored, angry, or sad. It serves as a perfect distraction and it fills me with a strong emotion… Fear.
Can’t beat that heart racing feeling ^^
    Happy new year guys!

  96. I guess part of why I read them is because I’m still looking for something to really unsettle me. I want to find something that scares me, as a sort of test for myself, I suppose.

I do the same with horror movies, I try to watch a ton of them (but end up largely disappointed) because I want one that makes me scared to go to sleep that night.

I write horror to try and provide that feeling to others. I want to unsettle them; I want them to be unable to sleep at night.

    1. Basically, I do the same thing you do. I read them to make myself scared and see what I can withstand. I also do it to find what I actually am scared of. I find the mental/science-y ones unsettling. I think I like reading better than watching scary movies because I’d rather let the image be in my mind, created by my mind, than something created by someone else attempting to scare me. I’m trying to greatly improve my writing. I want to do what you do. To try to unsettle the reader. To leave them looking behind their shoulder when the light is switched off.
