Admin Update 8/29/2012

Estimated reading time — 3 minutes

Okay, people keep sending me emails and comments suggesting that I just “get a group of people and email them the stories and let them decide” – I’m going to explain here why I’m rejecting that idea currently.

The problem is, as it stands, that the whole “just email the stories to people!” idea actually serves to produce even more work for me. It adds the extra step of sending out the stories, waiting for people to reply (and given that these would be strangers/volunteers, their reliability is not guaranteed – advertising profits go directly into the monthly hosting bill, so a paid staff of readers nothing more than pipe dreams right now) and having to keep track of what has been read and reviewed and who hasn’t replied, reading the comments that DO get sent back and deciding (which means I’d have to read the stories anyhow), and still having the entire burden of that extra work + what I do already.

People have been saying “but it’s what Literary Magazines / other similar sites do” – they usually have the benefit of having paid employees and more than one person to oversee that process and all the other site/magazine workings, which can make that end up running more smoothly and being a good decision.

For just one person, it’s simply not going to do anything but slow things down. It also serves to ignore some of the other functions that Predhead helped me with – he wasn’t solely a reader. I’m looking for another CO-ADMIN (please don’t use that sentence as an excuse to spam me with applications, read the entire post before you get ahead of yourself), not just readers, for that reason. However, you guys won’t know that we have a new admin until they’re settled in, had a chance to get a good feeling for their responsibilities and the… “nuances” of the comment section… and are sure that they want to stick around.

The thing you guys have to remember is that this isn’t Cracked or one of those huge submission sites that have gone viral and been bought out by a big company.  Those sites have paid employees and more resources than just “well, let’s hope that advertising brings in enough to pay hosting this month”. I’m sure that many of you realize this already,  but it’s been made clear from a lot of the emails I’ve been getting  that many others don’t actually understand that I’m not backed by some faceless corporation with a bunch of money and employees at my disposal. We are the privately-owned corner bookstore as opposed to Barnes & Nobles. That is to say, Creepypasta is simply not capable of operating on the same level that most of you have gotten used to from places like Cracked or Lamebook… and that’s not the end of the world.

So once again, I’m asking that you guys simply be patient. I never said ANYTHING about the site closing, that’s a rumour that people started themselves. I simply said that the processing time for submissions would increase and asked for your patience. That is all. To the people sending me admin requests, inquiries about pay, frenzied concern about the site closing down, etc – none of that is needed. I’m touched, but it’s unnecessary.

I WILL find someone to replace Predhead, but as I’ve stated multiple times, I AM NOT HOLDING OPEN AUDITIONS FOR ADMINS SO PLEASE STOP EMAILING ME ABOUT IT. I appreciate the thought and eagerness, but please just stop. In the interest of saving time, I’m going to go ahead and say here that if you continue to send me such emails, I will no longer be replying.

The point I’ve been trying to convey is that people who are just readers will probably NOT notice any difference. The publication of stories will continue as normal. It’s ONLY submitters that will notice a slightly longer turnaround time; and even then, around a month for your story to be processed is NOT a sign of the impending apocalypse. I promise you, it isn’t. Submissions don’t die and reanimate into evil zombie submissions until, like, 6 months at least. So we’re still good!

I hope that this makes things a bit clearer.

In closing, I leave you with this message:

Ed Gruberman, you must learn patience.

  1. aaand thanks for the mobile sight. although a black background with white writing is creepier. not that its particularly important for most pastas.

    don’t turn around

  2. You’re on the mobile version. Scroll to the bottom and switch back to the PC version and all will be normal. For some reason, the site is auto-detecting you as on a phone.

I implemented a mobile version as a few people have pointed out to me that the normal layout can rack up some gross data charges for people browsing using their phones.

  3. Ummmmm, i fell in love with this forum for many reasons, and i know you have a lot on your Plate right now, but what just happened to your site? I went from reading a post in a dark field to this modern? new? twitter stream? thingy

I’ve been poking around and as an avid reader this new setup makes me sad!!

New age pasta cite is depressing

  4. I can see how much pressure being an admin on this site can bring, and i feel bad for all the admins having to shift through all the new stories and all the constant people requesting to be admins. I do commend the admin team for there efforts tho and i only have two words for them. “GOOD JOB.”

  5. Wow, to think a rumor of the site closing started due to people jumping the gun about your post, Derpbutt. Still wishing you luck on finding someone you know to help you out. Me and DeadAces will continue to provide entertainment for you and the pasta community. Cheers!

  6. People will respect you more? Really? I respect our most august admin plenty already. People will complain no matter what because people are people. You can’t please everyone, ever, so all you can do is try your best, take what’s good (if anything) from any criticism you get and leave the rest. Just keep on keeping on august admin! And by the way, do you want people to keep submitting? I was going to submit something, but I was thinking about waiting until you are a little less overloaded.

  7. Why dont you just upload more pastas a day? Perhaps instead of the 1/2 interval you could post one evry 4 hours. Of course this means more work, but people will respect you more, and will hopefully stop complaining.

  8. Eh, for as many people who complain about me posting too much, we get people emailing wishing we posted MORE. There’s simply no way to please both camps, I’m afraid. I’ve gone in favor of posting more frequently just because so far, many more people have expressed that desire as opposed to the 2-3 people who have told me to post less (your comment included).

I notice a distinct pattern – people are harsher on pastas on the main site, sometimes to the point of absurdity (I still can’t get over the Zasphas comment section, for example). However, people tend to be very forgiving for things on Crappypasta, oftentimes voting up or defending things as “main site worthy” that, if they were posted here, would be absolutely ripped to shreds. You guys send me mixed signals like crazy sometimes!

The point is that I know that I’ll never be able to make everyone happy because we’re not all some taste-sharing hivemind – so all I can do is post the things that I personally enjoyed. If you don’t like it, rate it lowly, maybe give some constructive criticism, and move on.

I have been using Crappypasta more since Predhead’s departure, as you may have noticed. Things that I would usually put in the ‘Second Opinion’ bin for him to read because I just can’t deicde, I’m just putting on to Crappy instead, since if they’re good enough I know that you guys will make it clear. In this sense, Crappypasta allows you guys to be even more of a help for me, so I wish that more of you would comment and vote there!

Do note that I am paying attention to comments and ratings, but any changes I make in acceptance policies due to those opinions, you probably won’t see go into effect for awhile – stuff I’m reading today that is accepted for the main site, for example, won’t go up until October. So remember that right now, you’re still reading stuff that was submitted to us around late June to early July, when we were still getting into the swing of things.

  9. A question: why do you let so many pastas through? This site has published more pastas this month than in any single previous month, and a lot of them have been, quite frankly, sub-par.

Please put more on Crappypasta and give us one good story a day instead of three shitty ones.

I mean, you could at least stop posting the ones with bad paragraphing and borked dialogue punctuation. I used to see Creepypasta as a beacon of literacy in this cold, dark Internet, but that image is slipping.

I mean, it’s your site and you can totally do what you like, but I can’t help but think that it could only benefit from a tightening up of standards.

And fuck the submitters who complain about having to wait for their stuff to be approved. They should be grateful for the exposure.
